Cash for Life 1165 Loses a Grand Prize - Remains the Choice

The party is now over. One of the Grand Prizes for Cash for Life 1165 was claimed last week in the east end of the 905 area. Strangely, a friend was on a business call to a company when he learned that one of the company's drivers had won one of the prizes. He took the $675,000 lump sum. The OLG site was updated the next day. I have asked him to see what he can learn about the timing due to the question posted to the site two weeks ago about delays in updating winning tickets. We'll see if he comes up with anything.

Regardless, the game remains the top choice but it is now wobbly. Apart from the remaining Grand Prize, there is only one $5000 prize and one $500 prize left to be claimed above the $120 prize level. I would therefore recommend that anyone playing the game check at the retailer or on the Scratch Odds App to be sure that the Grand Prize is still there. Once it goes, this game will likely become the worst rated game. An estimated 827,000 tickets +/- 4% remain to be sold so be careful.

CASH FOR LIFE $4

Top Rated Games

  1. $4 Cash for Life 1165 (12% of float remains, +/- 4%)
  2. $3 Scrabble 1777 (7%, +/- 3%)
  3. $5 Money Multiplier 1769 (32%, +/- 2%)
  4. $5 20x Lucky 1789 (22%, +/- 3%)
  5. $20 Extraordinaire (91%, +/- 4%)

Games to Avoid

  1. Tetris
  2. More Lucky Lines #1775
  3. Fat Cat
  4. Bingo Express
  5. Crossword #3205

$1 - $2 Game Update

Bingo Express lost its last Grand Prize last week. The best choice is Red Hot 50s.

$3 Game Update

Scrabble 1777 is a strong choice but may be hard to find. Next best is More Lucky Lines #1776.

$4 - $5 Game Update

This is a strong area with three of the top five rated games. Stick to any of those choices.

$10 - $20 Game Update

The OLG (and ILC) are currently selling seven games in this area and we know that the public cringes spending that much on a ticket. I don't blame them. Prestige, Turbo Cash, and Extraordinaire are all reasonable choices.

Comings and Goings

Nothing to report this week. It's summer holiday time at the OLG.

Personal Play

I expanded my play last week and was predictably punished. Fourteen Cash for Life tickets contained 4 winners totaling $26. Very poor but not as poor as one poster who reports that he purchased 100 tickets and received only 40% of his investment back in winnings. The game returns 67% with 7% going to the Grand Prize winners. Knowing that he did not get the Grand Prize, he should have expected a 60% return and instead only received 40%. That is reason enough to abandon the game!

Meanderings

A reader left a comment this past week asserting that this blog is written by OLG staff to encourage the sale of bad games. That is not the case.

I write this blog as a hobby. My basic advice to anyone is not to buy these tickets or participate in any other OLG activity. Once you have discarded that basic advice, what I try to do is point you to the best choices and away from the poor choices. I am a critic of the OLG although, in fairness, I like to salute them when I feel that it is warranted. I have an interest in Horse Racing and therefore the Slots at Racetrack Program, slot machines in general, Casinos, and OLG Modernization. In all of those matters I have been a critic of the OLG and its strategic direction. On the other hand, my interaction with OLG employees has always been first class.

I thought that writing the blog would be a niche activity as Scratch and Win tickets are a simple form of entertainment for many people. I hope that anyone coming upon it would conclude that it is unbiased and helpful. If they do then I am more than happy.

I hope that your candidate was successful in yesterday's election.

  1. You are all not alone on losing. I am on my worst losing streak in recent memory. In the last week and a half (going back to before last weekend) I have won a total of $6 on one CFL ticket out of at least a dozen bought. 15 Crossword 3205 brought back zero, I know you advise against them but I love playing those damn things so much. I figured I'd try something different so I spent 20 on $1 & $2 tickets yesterday, all losers. Then to put the cherry on top I just got through scratching a Cadillac ticket that my wife gave me for Daddy's Day, you guessed it, zip. I'm not snivelling, just wondering how this is possible when OLG says we should win on average approximately 1 out of 4 overall. They wouldn't lie to us, would they? Like really, would they???

    1. Lloyd,

That's terrible. I'm going to write a bit about this in next week's update. If you tell me where you bought the Crossword tickets I'll check to be sure that there have been no insider wins at that establishment.

I'm attracted to those games too. I guess that's why the OLG issues them in floats of 20 million.

    2. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately we buy our tickets all over the east end of Toronto so it's hard to narrow down where they all come from. I could name about 10 stores we've used in the last couple of weeks. However I usually buy one Crossword ticket pretty much every weekday at Donwood Variety Store, 67 Underhill Dr. in Toronto. We also buy quite a few at our local store which is at 1000 Pape Ave. They just had a $50,000 winner on Bingo there recently. I should also say that my wife wins probably 1 in 4 times but she has the same luck as me in Crossword. Today I won $3 on Cashingo but we both bombed on Crossword as usual. I'll wait to see if you can uncover anything.

    3. B.T.W. I don't think you're an OLG shill. Nobody is forced to follow your advice. I'm sure most visitors would agree that the way you break down the odds can be helpful in selecting which tickets to go with. I do keep this in mind when I'm deciding which games I'm not going to play. So I for one thank for the work you put into this blog.

  2. 5 Turbo Cash got me $15 twice. I shouldn't complain. I want to but I shouldn't. I've been avoiding CFL because it is a money pit. You need to buy CFL to win the main prize and expect nothing else. That way you won't be disappointed well except for not winning the jackpot.

    1. Jay,

It seems that way to me too. The game sheet says otherwise but folks seem to be having unusually bad luck getting anything out of the game. I bought eight more this week so we'll see how it goes.

  3. I too have been having lousy luck on CFL as of late. Bought 15 tickets in the last week and have a couple of $4 wins and a lone $10 to show for it. Meanwhile my cousin in the valley has purchased 5 up there and taken home a $20 and two $4. Maybe there is something to the urban/rural division afterall??? lol.
Interesting to see where CFL goes this week - I wouldn't be surprised if the other grand prize gets picked up.

    1. I hate to say it but I've always thought there may be something to that regional thing. I notice when we spend weekends up around Barrie that we seem to win enough to keep playing for a few hours at a time. That just don't happen in Toronto.

    2. Interesting to see your experiencing the same thing. When I visit my buddy's in Wasaga this summer I'll have to test that theory out your way! lol

  4. On 56 total tickets for CFL I won 2.6% of the time with a 40% return if you don't count a 10$ free CFL ticket (which itself returned nothing). This was in Toronto, different stores over a few weeks.

    1. That should read 26% or 12 winners, which includes the 10$ free ticket.

  5. I get it..I was the guy who bought 100 cfl 1165 over 4-week period ..won a $22 prize and 3-$10 free cfl prizes which netted a single $10..all other prizes assorted s malls..approx 40% return..

  6. Why isn't CFL 1161 mentioned?

    1. CFL 1161 was not as good a choice as the top rated game, at the time, but it is not an altogether bad choice.

  7. 1165 was the game of choice, at least for me because the float is low and until last week there was still 2-.large grand prizes left..I've quit the 1165 altogether now...
Today tried 10 1776 lucky lines ..I won on three tickets totalling $11 ..
    Barely 30% return. .kinda typical..
I cant understand how Usockem figures you should expect closer to a 60% return..
I'm at about 50.. 1776 lucky lines and under 40% return.
I'm interested in U sockems next blogging on this topic.
    cheers

    1. I meant thats how I believe the prize money gets distributed amongst the winning scratch cards..
because im finding im not getting anywhere near 60% returns. .
      cheers

  8. I'm thinking the breakdown of the prize structure is roughly as follows:
    5% grand prizes
    20% intermediate prizes (under $2000)
    40% assorted s malls (under $50)
..So if you don't hit a nice prize(very difficult to hit) you can expect a 30 or 40% return on your scratch cards..
This is only my opinion and my math is a rough estimate. .but that's how I see it..thnx cheers

    1. Darth,
I'll provide some numbers on that. In general, there are more smaller prizes and fewer larger prizes than you has guesstimated. You should expect a return greater than 40%, to be sure.

  9. I visited a couple of retailers today and was told that both the CFL (1165) and Scrabble (1777) games have ended. Fortunately, I was able to squeeze a final $20 from the CFL game on Monday.
