20X Lucky #1808 Climbs To The Top

With the retirement of the orange Cross Tripler, 20X Lucky has taken over top billing while the OLG scoops up those four $100,000 Grand Prizes. The game has three of its seven Grand Prizes left to claim and 21% of the float left to sell. Your chances to snag a Grand Prize are 620,000:1. The game has a positive imbalance of 1.68 between the number of Top Prizes claimed and the total prize money awarded for those top prizes. At present, 21% of the top prize tickets are outstanding and 35% of the prize money for those 255 winners remains to be claimed. The game has a high churn rate of 59.6%. At present, $.097 of every dollar spent on the game goes to the three future winners.

Comings and Goings

Orange Cross Tripler was taken down from the list this past week. It was the game of choice although I was perturbed to learn that a reader found 40 of them, bought them all, and experienced poor luck. My condolences.

New on the scene is the $1 - $10,000 Spin game. It is very similar in structure to Cross Express although it does offer 2 more Grand Prizes. It is tough for any $1 game to get to a high position on the ratings although it begins life rated more highly than the $20 Extraordinary game.

Also new is the $5 Money Multiplier. It is also a typical $5 game although it only offers 6 Grand Prizes of $100,000 whereas most similar games offer 7.

Personal Play

Poor poor poor. Why can I not get anything more than the cost of the ticket as a return? My YTD return has now sunk to an odds defying 41%. Geesh.

In Conclusion

Here is this week's interesting lottery story:
http://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/us/unlucky-lottery-winner-loses-his-dollar1m-prize/ar-AA9JG83

The OLG Dart Team would have likely been finding a way to get that poor chap his money had he been a proud resident of Ontario. Those guys in California are tough.

Another reader messaged me about a way that he uses to play US based lotteries without having to venture across the border to play. The web site is: http://www.lottolishus.com/refer/CanadianLottoClub . I am going to poke around the site this week. Any comments/reviews from others would be welcome.

Spring is coming my friends. Hang in there.

  2. Quite amazing that #1828 Money Multiplier seems to have sold 1% of its float on its first day...

In any case,I have a small prize hit rate of 1-in-4.22 (23.7%) and small prize payback of 50.872% based on 200 games. Despite some players scoring nice wins, match 3 games are not the style of game I prefer so probably one play at most for me.

Luck swings the other way this time with my QFG plays netting 153% for the week. Could it be that this "Mr. Mac's Milk Store" that I happen to stumble upon is a lucky store? Just kidding, Doug. Really. No, really.

  3. Finally, for the first time since January a new game is on top (orange crossword was nothing but terrible to me). I noticed Doug has been hatin' on the $20 extraordinaire game lately (my old favourite game). This game should be retired and a new $20 game put out. Extraordinaire and Fortune have been out for almost a year now, Fortune still has a whopping 8 Grand Prizes left (oh where, oh where could they be). No top Grand Prize for either game has been won since X-mas.

All my scratch ticket money over the past while has been going towards the Living the life, and now the 6/49 super draws, and Lotto max $50+2 Mill. I'm still waiting for that DCFL winner to come out of the bush, its been like 3 weeks now.

    Grand prize: 6 x $10,000
    Next top prize: 153 x $100
    Low level prizes: $25 / $16 / $10 / $9 / $6 / $5 / $3 / $2 / $1
    Number of tickets: 3,060,000

    Odds to win:
    any prize - 1 in 3.83
    $2 or more - 1 in 6.85
    $3 or more - 1 in 16.40
    $5 or more - 1 in 38.51
    $6 or more - 1 in 62.69
    $9 or more - 1 in 168
    $10 or more - 1 in 254
    $16 or more - 1 in 410
    $25 or more - 1 in 2,213
    $100 or more - 1 in 19,245
    $10,000 - 1 in 510,000

    Out of all 27 games:
    Ranks 19th on winning $5,000+
    Ranks 24th on winning $1,000+
    Ranks 25th on winning $250+
    Ranks 25th on winning $100+
    Ranks 27th on winning $50+
Ranks 12th on winning 2x-5x your $ or better
Ranks 15th on winning a ticket price back
Ranks 17th on winning any prize

The good news: ... uhm... it ranks 6th on winning 2x+ on your $. The bad news: just about everything else. The odds to win anything on this ticket are 1 in 3.83 and the odds to win more than $3 are 1 in 39. Out of 3 million tickets, there's only a pathetic 159 prizes worth more than $25. I rate this game a 20/100 making it the 2nd worst ticket there is. I don't ever bother with $1 games, but If you do, your better off with $1 WILD 8s DOUBLER 27/100.

    Ranks 5th on winning $1,000+
    Ranks 4th on winning $250+
    Ranks 4th on winning $100+
    Ranks 6th on winning $50+
Ranks 7th on winning 2x-5x your $ or better
Ranks 24th on winning a ticket price back
Ranks 24th on winning any prize

The good news: it has the best odds for a 5$ ticket to win $100+, $1,000+ and $5,000+. It ranks in the top 7 in 7 out of the 9 categories i rate games on. Odds of 1 in 7.61 to get a doubled win. The bad news: odds of 1 in 4.06 to win any prize, which is 4th worst, but $5 tickets are generally bad in this area (3.70-4.59). You can win in as many as all 10 games (no 6,8 or 9 tho) and you can have from 1 up to 7 doubled wins. There is those bogus double wins of $2 and $3 in this game. I agree with those who beleive a single prize should be no less than the price of the ticket. Doubled wins are 37% $10 / 59% $12-$25 / 3.6% $50 or $100 and 0.4% $250 or more. I rate this game a 66/100, making it #4 out of all 27 games and as the best $5 ticket.

  6. Hi Doug
Did you get a chance to look at the CA lottery yet? I was reading about it today but not sure and I would love to hear what you think of it, the person who sent you the info have they ever won? Uncle Sam takes 30% of the winnings from people who don't live in the US but I know you have to win over $5,000 I think and the subscription fee is 7.99 is that every month or one time fee? It sounds pretty interesting but our dollar to the US dollar really sucks unfortunately...
Looking forward to what you think and has anyone else had a look at the site? maybe we should form our own group if there's enough of us... :0)

    1. Shelly, To answer some of your questions with full disclosure, I was the one who approached Doug and yes I have won 9 times since joining in January twice on my own ticket and 7 times on random selection from winning tickets from other pool members. Total winning to date is $2.10, but I didn't join to win the small prizes my hope is to win either a grand prize or 2nd place prize which is 1 Million dolllars whether I win on my own ticket or win a 5% share of someone else ticket I will be extremely happy to pay the 30% tax!!! The $7.99 fee is a monthly subscription fee, I opted for the yearly fee of $79 as I was playing anyways as I would drive over the border anytime the jackpot was greater than 100 million, so this is a great savings in time and money for myself. I approached Doug after he made a comment about the huge US jackpots and I believe this is a great way for a group of lottery players such as those on this blog to play in some of the biggest jackpots in the world. If you have any further questions please ask or check out the Facebook page which has a video from the owners explaining how it works. The pool is still relatively small as it only officially launched in October and is open to everyone worldwide

    2. Hi Steve
Thanks for the reply and the info, I do have more questions for you if you don't mind, you can play 4 times a week or just 2 so it states on the website. How many games are you playing a week? how many people are in your pool since you've won 9 times and only won $2.10 that seems pretty low. The Canadian Dollar really SUCKS right now so the conversion from CDN to US will be crap. If I understand your winnings is small because not many people have joined? Also are you paying with a credit card to join and if any of us joined we would go under you correct?
Please get back to me when you have time, I'm still interested.
      Thanks

    3. Hi Shelly, yes you can play in either the mega million draw or power ball draw or both. I personally play in both using the exact same numbers in both. In my pool I have 6 people, family and friends and friends of friends, I actually have not won once off of anyone in my personal pool, the wins I have received were from "meteor strikes" which are 5% wins from people within the entire pool of people. The low winnings is due more to the prize structure as both drawings are very top prize heavy and a 5% win of $1 is only 5 cents. But like I said I am not in it for the small prizes. Obviously you will win many more little prizes. I do pay with a credit card on automatic rebill monthly. As far as joining yes you can join under me, but I would suggest we change the referral code after every new member signs up that way everyone gets the benefit of a personal group. Hope that answers your questions, but feel free to ask anymore.

Did OK on money multipliers... Won on 5/14, just broke even, 5, 10 and 15wins.

Picked up 5 20x lucky and won 25 on one so broke even....

Should I switch from money multipliers to a $3 game...? No real worthy ones out there.

    1. Play the games you seem to have luck on.

Sometimes all the math in the world doesn't help and it boils down to luck. I'm sure there are many grand prize winners who have never read this blog and/or don't care about the math.

Given that these are ALL negative expectation games where the OLG has a minimum 30% hold, all results posted here (mine included) are probably the result of luck and/or sample variation.

As humans, we like to believe we see certain patterns or have the ability to control our destiny or skew the odds but this is gambling and although there are some things we can do to better the odds, it's still minor b/c the odds against us are so great.

Play the games you like, savor the wins, try to have some fun along the way, dream a little....

  9. CL66, I've been meaning to ask you why you rank Cadillac Riches so high (the highest for a long time!;), even though it's an inter-provincial game? Is it because there are many smaller prizes to be won? Educate me, please...:)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My rating of games is based on how well a ticket does across 9 different categories and then i compare the results to all other games - i`ll be posting later today an update, for now i`ll show you how Cadillac did on my last rating:

      Out of 25 games:
Ranks 5th on odds to win $50,000+
Ranks 8th on odds to win $5,000+
Ranks 3rd on odds to win $1,000+
Ranks 4th on odds to win $250+
Ranks 2nd on odds to win $100+
Ranks 2nd on odds to win $50+
Ranks 16th on rating to win 2x+ to 5x+ on your $
Ranks 1st on odds to win a ticket price back
Ranks 6th on odds to win any prize

Cadillac then scores a 79 out of 100, making it #1 on my ranking - Doug's ranking seems to only have 2 factor's: best odds for a grand prize and best odds to win 2-5x on your $ - from my perspective, ALL prizes should be taken into account - i post my 9 categories every week so anyone can clearly see what my final rating is based upon - you can choose from these 9, which category(s) you feel matters most to you so you can decide for yourself what's a worthy ticket - you said "even though it's an inter-provincial game?", so i assume you have a bias against these? in my opinion, there are no true facts to have such - a greater % of tickets for "I.P" games are sold in Ontario than in any other province, so then a greater % of prizes are possible here! - thankyou for your question and please feel free to ask me anything anytime ^_^

    2. So do you buy the odd cadillac scratch ticket then? I've purchased about 7 and haven't won a thing, not even my money back. I pretty much stay away from $10 tickets now as the lost just costs too much. I much rather play $5 tickets as I have had a pretty good return on those orange crossword tripler

    3. Thanks for your reply, CL66!! :)

I have purchased the caddy ticket on a whim 5 times, and of those, I won on 3. I won $50 twice (one was the first ticket I ever bought), and a $10.

Though I do take the statistics of odds to heart, I mostly choose tickets that I really enjoy scratching, like the crosswords. I'm a sucker for games and puzzles and these are the closest it gets to "playing" a ticket.

Today I bought 6 of the pink Triplers and won on 4:
      1: $20 match 3
      1: $5
      1: $10
      1: $30 ($10 tripled!!)
$65 won for $30 spent. AND I had fun...! ;)

      Delete
    4. yes - with cadillac i just buy the odd ticket - i`ve won $50 on it 5 times since it came out - i usually buy just 1 $10 ticket at a time and bejeweled is what i`m getting now, i prefer it since it offers good odds on small wins and it's top prizes with a small float - all the $5 tickets are what i regularly play - i sometimes buy a dcfl or a bingo and that's it - i don't really bother with else as most of the under $5 tickets suck!

      Delete
    5. Oh cool! a ticket someone enjoy's SHOULD be a top factor in deciding what to get - that you won on 4 of 6 and basicly doubled your $ is like getting extra dessert lol - me, i won`t ever buy a bunch of the same ticket, tho, once in awhile maybe 2, due to a ticket i wanted not being available - i prefer variety, like my last tickets were 1 each of: bejeweled, 5 different $5 tickets, a dcfl and a bingo - it would lose appeal to me if i had many of the same ticket, where the fun might seem to turn to work when i`m like ... now scratching ticket #...5 ... lol - those 8 tickets i last got, i even did them spread out over 3 hours, ended up $42 spent and $41 won btw - i also NEVER have just scratched a code and scanned it right after it's bought 0_o

      Delete
    6. @Bill Tay: Play the ones you like to play and play the ones you're lucky at. It overrides the math every time!

@Uplifter: I think one of the reasons CL66 has a high number of $10 near the top isn't the calculation of the odds (a mechanical exercise) or even the summing up of his special 9 categories (not 7, not 8, but 9!) but, and this is only my opinion, the definition of certain categories themselves.

It would make sense that $10 (or $20 or $5) would rank higher in the win $1000 or win $100 or win $50 categories because the win multiples are smaller. A $10 ticket winning $50 is a 5x prize. A $3 winning $50 is a 16x prize. The higher priced tickets will dominate these categories and after summing up the 9 categories will most often end up near the top of the overall category listing.

Still, without consideration to remaining float, size of top prize, cost of ticket and player budget, the higher priced tickets do tend to have the higher payback and better odds-of-winning-something, at least at the beginning of the game.

    7. CL66,

To be clear, my evaluation method combines the amount of game revenue won by winners of prizes of less than $100 with the ratio of Top Prizes remaining (all prizes listed on the OLG Outstanding List Page) with the prize money left for those same prizes. A game that has lost more than its share of Grand Prizes will be punished under the evaluation system. My ratings therefore favour games with an imbalance of Top Prize money left to be claimed that also provide the best low prize return to players. The second factor is fixed at the outset of the game and the first varies as the game progresses. Middle prizes are not given much weight in my method.

Your approach provides multiple weighting factors for games that offer more middle prizes. When I see a game that has lots of $100 prizes, I know that you are going to love the game. Cadillac Riches fits that profile. So does the new $5 Money Multiplier. Thus, your method and mine are likely to end up at different destinations. I like this as it provides readers with something to think about before they make any decisions.

I think that Tommy's comments on this subject are spot on. Anyone's method to evaluate games is as valid as another's as long as you understand what the system is designed to measure. In the end, we are all playing against a huge house advantage and the best advice to anyone who wishes to play is to buy the tickets you enjoy playing.

      Best.

      Doug

I took your advice and have bought 4 Rudy's and have won on all of them.
      1st- 35.00
      2nd- 10.00
      3rd-40.00
      4th-40.00
I would say that's pretty darn good.
      Thank you
I'm going to play more of them and Bejewelled and Cadillac. Not doing good on the $5.00 games at all so I'll step it up a notch.
We just got back from Florida and 5 different places I went to buy them they have them on Rolls and you don't get to pick them they do it for you. I won NOTHING on them. They have a $25.00 scratch I was tempted to buy but didn't...lol
Its the first day of SPRING... :0)

    3. Darn it. Prize money remaining to float profile just turned for the worse.

I too only buy D-CFL sporadically. Still, no one really knows where prize #3 and #4 are located.

Despite the odds, if you play 6/49 or Lotto Max, both of which have worse odds to winning the top prize, that shouldn't prevent you from dabbling with a D-CFL on occasion, IMO.

@Anon #2: Shanty Bay, Ontario (near Barrie) is what is listed so no, it must have been one of the 0.001% not-in-southern Ontario tickets.

      Delete
  11. Yes, but remember only 1 DCFL grand prize is equal to almost all of the Grand Prizes combined of a Cadillac Riches (you highly rank) for example. And a DCFL costs 40% less than a Cadillac Riches. I'm sure everyone on here has their own ranking system though. But with DCFL losing 2 GP's quick, that definitely hurts. I was a former BCFL fan, so now I'm forced to cheer for DCFL....note the trend lol.

    1. cost of a ticket related to grand prize is only relevant IF you win the grand prize lol - lotto max offers a grand prize tonight 28 times dcfl''s grand prize for only $1 more than a bcfl ticket - but oh ya, there's that little fact that the odds to win it are 28.6 MILLION to 1 - d'oh! 0_o

    2. I think the best comparative method would be to calculated the expected payout of a particular game based on the estimated remaining float. This would account for remaining float, size of top prize, odds, remaining amount of cash available for all prizes, cost of ticket (the results normalized to $1) and all prize categories.

It's way too much work to be done by hand. Supposedly there's a magic device out there called a "spread" "sheet" which can do this should someone out there decide to attempt this.

  16. The last BCFL $100K prize was just claimed. Still one GP left. There are a lot of donuts in that 'unclaimed prize column.' By the looks of it, not much of the float left. I'm surprised it's still up on the website.

  17. Interesting to see 2 of the guaranteed prize numbers sold in Ontario from Saturday's 6/49 draw started with 553 since ticket sales were nowhere near 553 for that draw. Ticket sales from Thursday to Saturday would have started at 576 since there were guaranteed prize numbers from Wednesday's draw that were 576. I'm guessing the tickets with 553 might have been people who played the same ticket for multiple draws from a few draws ago. I've done that before if I'm going on a trip (bought a ticket and played it for 3 or 4 draws while I was away) and I've wondered sometimes if the guaranteed prize number really makes it into the subsequent draws weeks later since ticket sales are nowhere near that number anymore and the numbers get discarded from draw to draw. If your ticket covers 4 draws, of course it makes sense that the number is still in there for all 4 draws, but since I've never seen an Ontario guaranteed prize number win that seems to go back in time to when previous numbers were sold weeks earlier, it's something that I've wondered about. If the 553 numbers were from tickets valid for multiple draws, it's reaffirming to see that it can and does happen.

    1. Your explanation makes sense.

I also do the on-vacation-multiple-draw thing.

  18. I had about 10 different tickets for Saturdays draw and they all started with 578. What really made me angry though was that the majority of the draws ended 01 or 02. What I should of done was buy 1 play per ticket and buy 30 different tickets. I bought two different tickets with 10 plays each for a total of $60. So my numbers went from 01-10. However, since majority were 01-02 I should of split these plays up into numerous tickets to up my chances.

    1. Um... that's not quite how it works.

Your "guaranteed" number is probably a hash (formula) number generated from information such as your retailer, the date and time of purchase, etc. which explains why they all started with 578. As you've noticed, the last two digits will probably be in sequence (ie., -01, -02, -03...) if you buy a bunch of single tickets in a row as well.

It really doesn't matter what numbers you get so long as they're all UNIQUE. The winning guaranteed prize numbers are then drawn from this list of unique numbers so the reality is each of your guaranteed numbers had an equal chance compared to every other guaranteed number out there.

Yes, I too was disappointed that my first three digits didn't even show.

    1 Ruby: $10
    1 Bejewelled- $20
    1 money multiplier- $20 (double $10)
1 Crossword Tripler- $75! Finally I won more than $30 on this ticket! :)

  20. Nice wins. The odds against that 15x Tripler win is around 1-in-2000. 2000-to-1 for a 15x prize. C'mon OLG, how about giving back a bit more??!
