Scrabble Loses Grand Prize - Crossword #3212 Takes Over Top Spot

With the loss of one of its two Grand Prizes, Scrabble #1861 drops into second place. Replacing it on top is Crossword #3212. This is a jumbo game with an original float of almost 15 million tickets. Only an estimated 9% of that float remains (+/- 2%) but that translates into 1.4 million tickets so you should be able to find them in your local area. Three of the original 9 $50,000 tickets remain to be claimed. Also available to be won are 2 of 9 Second Prizes, 1 of six Third Prizes, and 1 of four Fourth Prizes. That's pretty good availability for a game whose days are running short.

On the downside, only 1 in every 4.25 tickets is a winner (4th worst) and one in 6.93 is worth more than the price of the ticket (8th worst). Regardless, the top prize money imbalance places this game well on top of the list.

Top Rated Games

  1. $3 Crossword #3212 - Very positive Top Prize imbalance.
  2. $3 Scrabble #1861 - Available tickets getting scarce. Only one GP left.
  3. $3 Keno #1417 - Best game with wide availability.
  4. $3 Fruit Explosion #1866 - Good game and selling rapidly.
  5. $30 250 Golden #1782 - Best of the expensive games.

Games to Avoid

  1. $10 Classic White #1844 - A stinker and still 2.5 Million tickets left. Beware!
  2. $1 Red Hot 50's #1827 - Terrible choice.
  3. $1 Lucky Lines #1826 - Forget it.
  4. $1 Hit 100 #1849 - The best of the worst.
  5. $4 Cash For Life #1171 - Half the Grand Prizes left and 3/4 of the tickets to sell.

Games Devoid of Grand Prizes

  • Classic White

Comings and Goings

Tripling 7's was retired this week - thankfully. Only 10% of the float remained and all the Grand Prizes had been claimed. The game was ranked 20th of the 25 games for sale.

No new games were introduced. The overall Top Prize money availability sits at 99.8% and there are 100 million tickets available for sale.

Nothing to report.

Here's the kind of guy I liked to see get lucky: http://www.intelligencer.ca/2016/02/19/roblin-man-scratches-100000-win .

Here is OLG news concerning the extension of the second chance prizes for Instant Bingo. https://bingocontest.olg.ca/ec/webversion.aspx?i=63e495f1-0bd5-44bf-893f-61c3c9693035
I always wondered why they added this little feature and why they have extended it. Any wisdom from readers?

And lastly, an article from Niagara This Week wherein the Mayor of Niagara Falls is expressing concern about the impact that the Woodbine expansion will have on the Niagara Falls Casinos. http://www.niagarathisweek.com/news-story/6327690-woodbine-theatre-a-cause-for-concern-diodati/ . Of course it will impact! I have little doubt that a significant percentage of Niagara's business comes from Toronto. As soon as table games are added and a concert hall built, the bleeding away from Niagara will begin in earnest.

Best to all.

  7. This is a message to all problem gamblers. I am a concerned citizen who is in a Finance/Wealth Management profession.

Lottery is a tax on the stupid lazy people who just can't comprehend the meaning of probability and odds. You can do all the Math in the world, and use all kind of formulas to make your ratings for the lottery but at the end of the day you lose. Winning the lottery is a random event. If you buy a ticket you get an extremely small chance to win. So every day why waste your time doing number crunching when you won't win even if you keep playing for decades to come. Instead, go get an education, and enter a profession where you make enough money to live happy. If you want a dream house, dream car or travel the world then you must stop throwing your money away on lottery and get an education that qualifies you to a better paying career. Hoping to win the big grand prize is a complete waste of time...and time is essentialy money.

    Start with this:
    1. Stop being lazy. If you want money, then get it, go after it but the only guranteed way to get money is to EARN it.
    2. Quit gambling.
    3. Start paying off debt with your current job.
    4. Finish school or upgrade you degree/certification.
    4. Get your dream career.
    5. Save, and invest
    6. If you have successfully made it to step 6, then congrats. Now you can buy your dream house, a sports car, travel the world and live a luxury life.

Follow these steps and you will live like a millionaire.

      Delete
  8. Im not selling a book. I am telling gamblers to stop wasting hard earned money. Every other day when I see people buying 20 lines of Lotto Max at the gas station makes me LOL at people. These people are dumb, stupid as in low IQ, and most of all LAZY. Like I said if you want money then go get it. One guranteed way to get money is through education, patience and discipline. Most successful people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Mark Zuckerberg, and other millionaires/billionaires and even CEO's of fortune 500 companies have made it through education or intellectual abilities, discipline and patience. Billions of dollars are wasted every year by this tax on the stupid people and people are falling victims to gambling. Again I am not selling a book or anything because quite frankly this message or the meaning behind my message can change someones life and I hope that a problem gambler reads this and decides to quit gambling and starts to pay off his/her debt and enrolls in school to get a better paying job for a better and happier life.

LOL yur a joke... CL & Doug are out here helping everyone on this blog.. and you are here spouting your nonsense.. take your 2 cents and get on the F outta here!!!

    2. Dear Anonymous,

If you follow this blog you'll know that in no way does anyone recommend purchasing scratch tickets or gambling of any sort as an alternative to sound life planning.

In previous postings I have highlighted that if you were to purchase, for example, tickets in the game with the best current odds to win the grand prize of $75,000 (not life changing), you could expect to win the prize after 101 years of buying 10 tickets per day. Rather daunting, to say the least.

I also agree that it is best to eliminate bad debt, pay down one's mortgage, contribute to an RSP and TFSA and RESP, and carefully manage a home budget.

One of my mother's favourite expressions is, "A penny for groceries and a penny for violets." Buying scratch tickets involves the fun of scratching and the hope of winning. If done responsibly, it brings a little light into people's lives. Nothing wrong with that.

Life is a combination of the practical and the whimsical. We should all be happy that we have a few dollars to toss away in the pursuit of an elusive Grand Prize.

Thanks for posting but I hope that the advice you give to your clients has a little bit more sugar coating on it than your post here.

      Doug

    1. Get a life CL66... please find another hobby. You are wasting your time gambling and hoping to win one day. That one day might happen when your 92 years old... whats the point of winning that much loot when you don't have time to use it? That might not even happen because your more likely to die on your way to buy a lottery ticket. Do you understand math CL66 or did you flunk out of highschool? CL66 you are pathetic because I'm not a stupid person like you who gambles away money. Instead I use money to make money (investments). Statistics is not rocket science. Please take a course on statistics then you will realize that your number crunching that you do almost everyday is complete waste of time. You must be one of those fools who buys 20 lines of lotto max week after week..losing money week after week hoping to win one day... well even if you live for hundreds and thousands of years on this planet, you still have an incredibly small chance to hit your first million in the lottery. Stupid people like CL66 enjoy wasting money and time... thats quite pathetic.

    2. Tell me something... have you ever won a million dollars off the lottery? I bet you any money that you haven't. And most likely you won't in this life time and its not my opinion.. Its a fact proven by something called MATHEMATICS. Math cannot help you predict future or pick out numbers from randomness. If you play the lottery and you are crazy about number crunching then my friend you are a BIG retarded low IQ, lowlife loser who thinks that one day you will strike it rich... hahaha consider this: Lotto Max has 1 in 28 million chance of winning. That's almost the population of the entire country.. so pick one random person from this entire country then they will be the winner. The odds are horrible and extremely small. You will keep gambling and throwing your money off to the government who is taking it with open arms... haha gamblers = losers... people who work hard in life are the real winners thats the difference between me and you gamblers.

  12. thanks for the s/o doug :), since your pretty good with your math, could you tell me the odds of winning on my $225 ticket i won about 2 months ago for crossword trippler, it was the green ticket, which is the old one, as the blue new version of the game was out also, i just didn't pick the new one. I looked and it was 1 in 7000 to win 225 for the new crossword trippler that had come out. what do you think my odds were winning on the old game. I'm guessing 1 in 14000?

    thanks, vic

    1. Vic - the prize structure with Crossword Tripler is mostly the same with each edition - with the current game, yes, the odds are 1 in 7,000 to win $225 (or 1 in 3,951 to win $225 or more) - the previous "green" edition was 1 in 7,002 to win $225 (or 1 in 3,950 to win $225 or more).

  13. I am now a whopping 0 for 14 on Diamond Payout tickets. I fully admit that I'm a dumbass for stubbornly continuing to buy these. I find my bad luck almost laughable.

    1. This is why I am telling all gamblers to quit and save your money. You going 0/14 on a $10 ticket thats $140 flushed down the toilet. If you invested that $140 in a mutual fund your money would grow. You don't have patience for mutual funds and you just want to get rich quick. It's not going to happen and Its not bad luck... its because MATH is against you. You see the ticket float for the "Diamond Payout" is in the millions... with grand prizes totaling maybe 20 tickets. So out of a million tickets lying around there are only 20 grand prize winners. The odds are extremely horrible. That's why please next time you want to spend $10 so badly then put it in a savings account or invest it. Gamblers = Losers and Investors = Winners

      Delete
    2. I understand what you're saying about investing, but no need to be all high and mighty about it. I didn't know that investing and buying lottery tickets were mutually exclusive. When did they make it illegal to do both?

I'm not choosing between eating and buying lottery tickets. It's a form of entertainment, pure and simple. Some people use their money to buy alcohol and go out to clubs, some use it to take fancy trips, others spend lots of time and money playing video games. Do you look down your nose at those people too?

What you're saying about investing is true. But hiding behind anonymous comments on a blog while thumbing your nose at people with a shared hobby and making the assumption that nobody here takes personal finance seriously is, quite frankly, pathetic.

    3. Hmmm....so the markets and mutual funds are always better, eh, Anonymous?

Except in Canada mutual funds have huge MERs, and over 70% of all mutual funds do not do even as well as an index fund.

Plus we have a still poorly regulated securities regime here, another Bre-X or Nortel could still easily happen in Canada.

Plus the industry giving advice, "financial planners", is hopelessly corrupt. Ever wonder why those bank "advisors" always tell people to invest in bank GICs and mutual funds? Commissions, that are still not disclosed.

Do NOT buy mutual funds, ever! Buy a balanced mix of ETFs, weighted mostly non-Canada, with the rest in more secure money instruments, proportioned based upon your years to retirement. ONLY go with a fee-based financial advisor, and never pay more than 1% of your portfolio value in annual fees. Do NOT gamble on individual securities unless you have at least a 7 figure portfolio.

It is because securities are so misunderstood by people like Anonymous that so many Canadians have also turned to an even bigger gamble, the single-asset strategy of "investing" in real estate. Real estate, historically, has NEVER been an investment. It rises only by the rate of inflation over time. All bubbles correct. Always. You are deluded and living in a real estate bubble if you think otherwise. Which is exactly where we are now in Canada, with millions about to lose their shirts. (This is why, adjusted for inflation, Trump has actually LOST money over the years in his "real estate empire" - the money he inherited from daddy would be worth more today if he had just put it into an ETF - look it up if you don't believe me)

It is strange, isn't it, how so many turn to "investments" that are really very dangerous gambles. Real estate, penny stocks are always the financial end of so many ordinary people.

At least lotteries are a transparent, obvious gamble to everyone, especially the more thoughtful posters here.

As we think of lotteries, we remember they are an entertainment loss, so we might want to avoid terms like "return on investment". Your job is to have fun and mitigate losses, not get a "return on investment" - since the "investment" disappears, LOL!. Maybe, once in a long while, you will win something worthwhile. Enjoy the chase in the meantime. It's all fun, unless it isn't, and then get some help.

    5. Hey Randy... thanks for giving me the lecture on Financial Markets...but did you copy paste that off Wall Street Journal???? Let me put it simply in your cranuim that Investing is not gambling. You make mutual funds and other financial instruments sound like buying scratch tickets. Ha ha ha. Nice one. Investing is a slow growth process as it takes years and years before your investment portfolio grows. If you think stock market is a gamble then your an idiot. Sure stock markets can crash at any time but can they rebound really fast? Absolutely they can (something called volatility). If you do your homework, make sound investment strategies and understand P/E ratios, Market Cap etc, Asset Classes, diversify, and contribute consistently in to your investment portfolio then you will get wealthy. For the period 1950 to 2009, if you adjust the S&P 500 for inflation and account for dividends, the average annual return comes out to exactly 7%. So doesn't it make sense to stick to a steady investment portfolio that grows 7% long term??? Invest for 20 years as a long term investor and it will pay you dividends. But gambling on lottery and making all these ratings on which scratch ticket to choose from is just laughable... a million tickets and only few grand prize winners...thats the bottom line and people like Jay Dee going 0/14 on the $10 ticket is a joke. Its the govt winning and you gamblers loosing. Deep down you all know you guys are suckers even though you think its entertaining to loose money every day, every week..haha yeah its very entertaining to loose money (LOL)

    6. Anonymous,

No one on this board is of the belief that scratch tickets represent an alternative to saving for one's future. What they do not appreciate is being called names for having some fun with a portion of their disposable income.

The responses to your screeds demonstrate that posters to this blog are not the cretins you may have supposed they were. By the way, the word is "lose", not "loose."

This latest troll is just some lonely bored and self confessed smart person who takes joy in making people look like morons.apparently he believes we are all lined up with our welfare cheques just hoping we can win a jackpot. .

Quite the opposite on this board as we are well aware how difficult it is for any of us to hit a jackpot...lol..And as far as mutual funds go, well mine are down so much in the past year that it's way more than my gambling losses for for the past 5 years.

On this board we collectively help each other with mathematical studies, hints and tips on how to lose less money on our hobby while enjoying the remote possibilities of hitting some worth while prize. .

I have decided to scale back drastically on scratch tickets. I did try 7-11-21 quite a number of times, probably about 30 tickets, only ever won $5 a few times, it is a pretty big batch, I think 3.1 Million...maybe the Ottawa area got mostly losers and small wins from the first printing.

I have decided to only purchase 6/49 and Lotto max when the jackpots are worthy, and if I get free plays, just rolling them into the next week's draw as long as the pot is still high, if not I hold on to them.

I have also decided to try Keno, just $1/$2 bets and either doing pick 5 or pick 7.

Hope to report back with some winnings.

Good luck to everyone and watch out for tomorrow's storm!

  16. A meeting with my OLG insider resulted in nothing really newsworthy for me to post here - i received a few items from them tho.

An internal memo of a recent regional retail report http://s196.photobucket.com/user/one9six6/media/recent%20regional%20retail%20report.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1 this is where ticket agents compile feedback they receive from retailers on OLG product.

4 new sampler tickets - 2 of which will be out this coming Monday: $3 Pacman Slots http://s196.photobucket.com/user/one9six6/media/Pacman%20Slots.jpg.html?sort=3&o=2 & $5 High Roller http://s196.photobucket.com/user/one9six6/media/High%20Roller.jpg.html?sort=3&o=3 - the other 2 are games without a release date: a new $3 Crossword http://s196.photobucket.com/user/one9six6/media/Crossword%20NEW.jpg.html?sort=3&o=5 & a new $5 Crosword Tripler http://s196.photobucket.com/user/one9six6/media/Crossword%20Tripler%20NEW.jpg.html?sort=3&o=4

While most won't care about this: $2 Red Hot $50's was deactivated last Friday - while the unclaimed prize page shows the new $2 Double Dollars ticket http://s196.photobucket.com/user/one9six6/media/4.jpg.html?sort=3&o=46 , i have yet to see it in my area and the OLG website doesn't have a page up for it yet, so there's no fact sheet that i can use to post a review on it - there is 1 more new game making a return on March 21st and it's $5 Black Pearls.

Lastly: i padded my photobucket page of OLG wins with a nice one today - i continually show proof of my wins too add credibility my to ticket ratings. http://s196.photobucket.com/user/one9six6/media/2016-3-1.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0
