Fruit Explosion #1834 Strengthens Its Grip

As Fruit Explosion  enters the twilight of its run, its one remaining Grand Prize remains up for grabs with 11% of the float (+/- 2%) left to sell. Your chances to win it are 1 in 350,000. The game has been de-activated and all my sources of tickets from last week have dried up. The game's small prize rate is a bit lower than most $3 games but it compensates by offering the best top prizes (>$100 and less than the Grand Prize) of any $3 game. At present, 7.1 cents of every dollar spent on the game are directed to the Grand Prize winner. That is the 3rd highest value of any game currently for sale and that is unusual for a $3 game.

FRUIT EXPLOSION

Top Rated Games

  1. $3 Fruit Explosion #1834 - clear choice.
  2. $3 Super Bingo #3018 - terrific small prize availability
  3. $3 Bingo #3016 - well rated in all categories
  4. $5 Cross Tripler #1830 - new version of the game: avoid version 1810.
  5. $3 Crossword #3209 - relatively new game; not a bad choice.

Games to Avoid

  1. $2 Black Jack #1804 - putrid choice. Delete this game OLG!
  2. $2 Fast 200's #1817 - I don't understand the appeal of this game.
  3. $5 Money Multiplier #1828 - deactivated as no Grand Prizes remain. Good work OLG.
  4. $4 Double Cash For Life #1170 - one huge prize....and nothing else.
  5. $10 Bejeweled #1786 - 30% of float remains and zero Grand Prizes.

Games to Play if You Only Want the Grand Prize

  1. $4 Double Cash For Life
  2. $10 Cash Blast
  3. $3 Fruit Explosion
  4. $20 Extraordinary
  5. $10 Fortune

Games Devoid of Grand Prizes

  • $10 Bejeweled
  • $5 Money Multiplier
  • $3 Wheel of Fortune
  • $3 Quest For Gold Crossword
  • $2 Black Jack

Coming and Going

$1 Cross Express and $3 Cashingo were each retired this past week. Cashingo was devoid of Grand Prizes and Cross Express had one Grand Prize left and 13% of its float. Neither game will be missed.

New to the family is $10 Cash Blast. There were already five $10 games for sale and one $20 game. Adding another to what was already a crowded field seems strange although Bejeweled is now devoid of Grand Prizes and will be retired soon. The good news is that the other $10 games have been a wasteland for some time. Cadillac Riches has been gaining ground recently joining Classic White and now Cash Blast as new options. Lets hope that one of them becomes a recommended play.

Personal Play

Ten Fruit Explosions contained five winners totaling $21. Really? I hit on half the tickets and still only cashed for 70% of my investment? Grrr.

In Conclusion

I tweaked my evaluation formula this past week, One of the factors I use evaluates how many Top Prizes are left to be claimed versus the prize money for those prizes as compared to how it stood at the outset of the game. I did not like the fact that if a game began with a very low total, such as QFG Crossword where only 2.4% of total revenue is returned to winners of $100 or more as compared to Fruit Explosion whose total is 6.1%, the game was not devalued a bit for that fact.

I have added a factor for that. Whether it is enough remains to be seen. For your information, the highest such total is Double Cash For Life at 19.4% and the lowest is Bingo Express at 1.3%.

TMF left a comment last week about feeding slot machines instead of buying scratch tickets for a while. To begin with, I have a big problem with slot machines. I measured myself one day at a casino and was surprised to learn that I can push a button on one of those machines 800 times in an hour. If you play a quarter slot with the three coin maximum for an hour you will churn 800 X .75 = $600. If the machine returns 85% you can expect to lose 15% of $600 or $90.

On the other hand, a dealer can deal about 60 hands of Blackjack per hour. If you play well, you can expect a return rate of 95%. It follows that if you sit down at a $25 table, your churn will be 60 X $25 = $1500. Your expected loss will be 5% of that total or $75.

It is shocking to realize that the casino makes more money from a person sitting at a $.25 slot machine than it does from someone playing blackjack at $25 per hand. Granted, you need a bigger bank roll to sit down at the Blackjack table but the math points out the insidiousness of those machines. That does not mean that I never play them, just that I know what they're about at all times. Good luck Tommy. It's always possible to beat the odds.

Happy hunting.

  1. So when is a new CFL game going to come out? DCFL has run its course as a lot of games mentioned above have as well.

Doug, to me it makes sense that the casino would make more money off people with slots than blackjack. In blackjack, you are given a choice once the cards are dealt, you can hit, stay, split, etc . These choices you make can help give you a better chance of winning. A slot machine there is no strategy, you just put in the quarter and push a button and hope all goes well. Also blackjack is normally considered a multiplayer game where slot machine is a single player game.

This is why I inquired about PLayOLG last week. Someone mentioned the games are not multiplayer (like when you sit down at the tables in a actual casino), and you are the only one in a room playing. When I was told that, all I can think of is how much I would be getting ripped off. The fact I'm the only one in a room and I place down a bet, no cards get turned for other people and nothing happens unless I myself put money down to play EVERY hand. This just smells like a scam. I have always been leery of online gambling.

If reminds of that movie starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake called 'Runner Runner'. It's where an MIT student gets swindled in Online Casino gambling. Obviously it's just a movie, but there is no doubt in my mind that these things have happened in real life at some point.

Also In real life, did you know Ben Affleck is banned from playing Blackjack at Casino's because of card counting. I never understood card counting. I've only ever played blackjack at the casino in Hull, they use multiple decks of cards at the same time shuffled into one...I just never understood how its possible to card count that. Perhaps if there is a card counting expert on here...please enlighten me.

    1. Personally, I think that card counting is a scam. Casinos are able to render it useless by increasing the number of decks put into a shoe and reshuffling when the shoe is only 2/3 empty. The card counter applies a skill of assigning one value to large cards and another value to small cards then calculating if an imbalance in either direction is created. If an imbalance towards small cards exists, this is a good thing and the player should increase the size of his/her wager. If you're playing in a casino that uses a single deck then the skill will be useful. You might find such a game in a location where casinos compete against each other for business. That is certainly not the case here in Ontario where the OLG carves us up into zones then sells us off to the highest bidder whose is legislatively assured of no competition being allowed.

I share your views on PlayOLG.ca. I have looked for assurance that a game like 3 Card Poker is played exactly as if I was playing against a shuffled deck. Can't find that anywhere on their site. It looks like 3 Card Poker, it feels like 3 Card Poker, but is it 3 Card Poker or is it a fancy Slot Machine? If you want to see what can happen when the site has zero oversight by any government, check out www.f***pokerstars.com.

I have played on PokerStars for very nominal sums and my experience mirrors what is presented at the web site.

    2. I got a question Doug about PlayOLG.ca and withdrawals. 1. When I sign-up can I use a credit card to purchase funds of lets just say $100? 2. For example, I'm playing roulette and put $100 on red, and I win and want to cash out my $200...how do those funds get transferred back to me? I assume they just wire transfer it to me and is it as simple as that? or do you have to pay additional fees or wait weeks to get your money, or any type of money limits?

  2. Thanks for the well wishes, Doug!

Did come back from slotting on the plus side and given that fun was had by one and
all, it was an enjoyable excursion and a nice way to spend the day.

Yes... those wheels are spinning at warp speed!! Remember... slots are paper (plastic?) shredders not ATMs!

There are some strategies to extending your play time, the most important of which is not to spin so quickly! These are negative expectation games so simply put, the more/longer you play the more you will lose... eventually.

Play in a group or with a partner so you can watch and cheerlead while the other person plays and then vice-versa. The catch is that the one who ultimately wins the most pays for the lunches and/or dinners.

A third strategy is related to the PTSD I mentioned in a previous post. PTSD refers to "Pay Table Standard Deviation" and more specifically how it relates to playtime. Knowing and understanding the pay table and having some idea of a game's volatility can help in deciding bet size and bankroll. The increase nowadays in volatility means a bigger bankroll is needed (and thus my fewer visits to the slot palaces) to ride out longer losing streaks.

And Anonymous is right in that slots involve no skill and so the casino's "hold" is greater.

One final note, Ben Affleck played me in my 2003 autobiographical film "Paycheck". Check it out!

    1. Tommy,

That's a strategy that I can get on board with. If everyone played that way the OLG would have a serious problem on its hands.

Tell us more about the PTSD. I'm curious.

    2. You asked for it...! The original article is "Simulating the Effect of Pay Table Standard Deviation on Pulls Per Losing Player at the Single-visit Level" by Lucas, Singh & Gewali, UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal, Vol. 11, Issue 1 (yeah, Tommy reads them all). Not surprising, what else would guys at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas do, right?

The gist of the article is... Zzzzzzz.

But simply put, the article examines how a slot machine's volatility affects the slot player's "satisfaction" over a single visit of play. "Satisfaction" being defined as either winning, losing but getting a decent amount of play time (what the industry calls "time on device"), losing but getting decent payouts, losing but believing the slots are fair, etc..

Volatility refers to the range of payouts. High volatility slots, sometimes referred to as high potential slots, is a slot machine that may pay larger than average wins at the expense of fewer smaller wins. The opposite can be said of low volatility machines, frequent small sized wins and limited or no possibility for larger wins. (I credit the slot player DProxima, if he's reading this, for this summary).

Simply, simply put, players like big wins. Manufacturers know this and are starting to produce higher and higher volatility slots. If you don't account for this by adjusting your bankroll or bet size, you will quickly deplete your bankroll and end your session, usually, dissatisfied.

It's sort of like making a 6/49 bet (an extreme example of high volatility) and seeing the results 800x an hour. Thus, the strategy is If you know the machine is highly volatile, you may want to increase your bankroll per session or reduce your bet size. I've chosen the former and as such have been making fewer trips to the palaces recently.

Granted, all this hinges on your luck and the payback percent being held constant.

  3. New CFL - i have no idea when it's set for release now - previously i had stated to look for this game in May - this was based on an OLG May retailer newsletter i received that showed it and 3 other games as what's new - the other 3 did come out but the new CFL did not - the 2 previous CFL games ran for 9 and 10 months - DCFL came out January 5th, so it should run till early October or November - with DCFL's current estimated 2.8 million remaining tickets, the OLG most likely would like to sell more of them before introducing the new game - as well, in a recent "pack report" i had, which always states "coming soon" games, the new CFL wasn't on it.

  4. CL66,

Unless that one remaining prize is claimed. I'll find it interesting to see what happens. I agree that if they introduced a new CFL game, sales for the existing one would dry up and with 2.8 million left to sell.....

I first became interested in this subject when a game of Ontario Millions was retired with several of its Grand Prizes still outstanding. I wrote to the OLG. The reply indicated that another version of the game was scheduled for release and that fact precipitated the de-activation of the current game. Since that time I have seen more than one situation that contradicts that claim. If any new CFL was held back due to the situation of the current game, that would be another example. Hmmm.

    1. Wow that's so great!! Can I ask how many Cash Blasts you've played in total? I have yet to try one of those and would like to get a sense of the return?

Thanks! And I wish you continued luck!

    2. I am 0 for 4 on Cash Blast. Yesterday I spent $80 (2 Cash Blast/2 Classic White/2 Extraordinaire) and did not win a dime.

    3. Since the game came out I've bought 4 Cash Blast. Honestly not one of my favorite games. I'd rather keep buying the $5 Crosswords (Blue) or Fruit Explosion but those are getting harder to find now. And thank you I wish you all Luck as well! On a side note I played Pro-Pick Pools Last night and if the Blue Jays would have Just won I would've gotten 10/10! Sigh...so close yet so far lol

  6. Great breakdown on which instant tickets are likely to make bucks and which are likely to go bust. I saw some Diamond 7s on sale at a local Loblaws a few weeks ago but no such luck today. Pondering whether to go for Super Bingo, 15x the Money or Instant Crossword after the Fruit well dries up. So far it indeed remains the best bet.

  7. With fruit explosion - has anyone noticed that the game board between tickets is exactly identical?
I managed to snare 4 tickets this afternoon - 2 $3 winners of the lot. By the 3rd ticket I had a feeling I was seeing the same symbols while scratching. After the 4th I was sure of it and after a quick check, it appears that all 4 tickets have the same game board (location of symbols). The kicker is that these all came from the same bundle and were only two of the tickets were in succession.
    Coincidence or something more?

    1. I'll start off my comment by saying I've never played Fruit Explosion but I have played Tetris (although not recently). I'm guessing the idea behind this is that there's no way for the buying public to determine if the card is a winner or not just by looking at the available information, which is the game board.

So basically, the win or loss is controlled by the symbols hidden beneath the latex. Not a bad idea especially after the Tic-Tac-Toe fiasco of several years ago. http://www.wired.com/2011/01/ff_lottery/

With all game boards the same they're telling the public to not even bother looking for patterns which I guess would help move the buyers' line more quickly.

Have to admit, I was a bit surprised. The Tic-Tac-Toe situation had immediately crossed my mind, but I had the impression they had a more elaborate system devised.
Either way, good to know I am not crazy......well completely crazy anyway.

  16. The last Double Cash For Life grand prize has been claimed - as per OLG policy, this game is now set to be deactivated - this should allow for the release of the new CFL as early as this Monday.

    1. CL66,
This will be a good test of OLG's policy. Let's see how quick they are to act.

    2. Quicker than all of us would have assumed lol - i just got back from the corner store and i got a pack report: DCFL has been deactivated as of yesterday, expect it to be retired near July 18th then / the new CFL game was not on this pack report / coming July 6th: a return of $3 Scrabble.

      Delete
    3. Glad to see they're keeping with policy..hopefully the new CFL game is out soon.
Scrabble is a welcome addition to the $3 games.
This week I played 2 cash blast and 2 classic white..all duds.
also 2 blue cross tripler, duds
and 3 fruit explosion, win $15
      ..good luck everyone

    1. It's nice to see small town folk win big prizes and I'm glad it's just outside Ottawa area. I was getting sick of hearing the 98% of big prizes coming from Toronto/GTA.

    2. I love this kind of comment as my perception of prize winners is exactly the opposite. I'm sure that psychologists would have a field day explaining how this can be true.

  18. Played the new Cash Spin on PlayOLG. Started with $9 to be exact and after playing for 25 minutes I was up to $650!! Needless to say I cashed out lol My luck this week has been ridiculous almost afraid of next week lol.

  19. $3 Fruit Explosion and $5 Winner Take All were deactivated this past Thursday - now only "loose" tickets can be sold up until they are reclaimed by the OLG - i expect these 2 games to be retired on or near July 19th.

  20. The new $4 Cash For Life game is out today - this is a "regular" version and should be the same as the last regular CFL game - also out today is the new $5 Crystal 7's game - it is essentially the same game as $5 Diamond 7's was.

  21. thanks CL, I don't see CFL posted on OLG yet but I will be on the lookout to buy some.

    The good news: It ranks 5th on winning $50,000+ and it has 25 different prizes, which is the most out of all games. The bad news: within 3.14 million tickets, there's only 9 prizes over $900. You can win up to 7 times on this ticket (no 6 times wins). The odds are: 1 in 20 to win in 2 games (55% $11, 16% $20, 28.6% $27, 0.4% $31), 1 in 39 to win in 3 games (79.6% $15, 17% $22, 3.4% $37), 1 in 132 to win in 4 games (85% $19, 11.2% $44, 3.8% $80), 1 in 175 to win in 5 games (87.25% $31, 12.5% $107, 0.25% $220) and 1 in 28,050 to win $900 in 7 games. I rate $5 Crystal 7's 58/100, making it 12th out of all 31 games and tied with $5 Crossword Tripler (pink) for last place for a $5 ticket.

    1. Oops - i forgot to also say - there are bogus prizes of $2 and $3 tied to the horseshoe/doubler symbol - this has always bothered me, as i beleive no prize should be less than the cost of a ticket.
