Diamond 7's Gets Better and Better

Over 350,000 Diamond 7's tickets were sold over the past two weeks without surrendering a Grand Prize. There remains two $77,777 Grand Prizes with odds of 208,000:1 to win one. That is 50% better than any other game currently for sale. The problem is that an estimated 14% of the float remains which means that they are likely already hard to find. The game also suffers from a slightly reduced Grand Prizes as a result of the theme of the game. Two weeks ago this game was a luke warm choice. It is now clearly the best game currently available for sale.

What is noteworthy at present is the poor ratings on all of the $10 games and the sole $20 game. One should expect that at least one or two of these games should be well rated. That is not presently the case.

DIAMOND 7s

Top Rated Games

  1. $5 Diamond 7's - Get em while you can.
  2. $3 Super Bingo #3017 -  2nd highest percentage of $ returned to small prize winners.
  3. $3 QFG Crossword #3208 - Solid game but 2 million:1 to win $50,000?
  4. $3 Fruit Explosion #1834 - Second best top prize ratio currently for sale.
  5. $5 Cross Tripler #1810 - Rates well on both factors.

Games to Avoid

  1. $4 Double Cash For Life - only 1 GP left and almost 5 million tickets. It's over for this game.
  2. $2 Black Jack - Still flogging these dogs. Shame.
  3. $10 Bejeweled - Poorly rated on both scales.
  4. $5 Hit Jackpot - Has nothing going for it.
  5. $2 Cash For Life - Very poor top prize ratio of 63%.

Games To Play If You Only Care About the Grand Prize

  1. $4 Double Cash For Life
  2. $10 Bejeweled
  3. $5 Diamond 7's
  4. $20 Extraordinary
  5. $5 Money Multiplier

Games With No Grand Prizes Left

  • $3 Words With Friends
  • $3 Wheel of Fortune
  • $3 Crossword 3207
  • $3 Cashingo
  • $2 Blackjack

Comings and Goings

The former top rated game, 20X Lucky was retired this past week. The game had one of its 7 Grand Prizes remaining and an estimated 16% of the float left to sell. My actual results on the game were poor. I bought, in total, 33 of the tickets, winning on six of them for a total of $85. Even when eliminating any prize of $100 or more, I should have expected to have enjoyed two more winners and an additional $17.

Personal Play

Bad bad bad. So bad that I took a week off as some of our posters have done of late. Maybe nature is telling me to forsake this endeavour and instead get outside. If so, I agree with nature.

In Conclusion

This from the Sault Star, "Sault Ste. Marie can let the opportunity of creating a lottery and gaming centre of excellence pass it by, or it can be poised and ready to embrace new technology and grow industry, the Chamber of Commerce was told Wednesday."\

A lottery and gaming centre of excellence?! Is this the new euphemism for a casino? I'm impressed that the OLG brass have not been discouraged by communities saying no to their plan to "improve" those communities by plopping a casino into them and letting a foreign casino operator run the business. Good thing that the OLG does not run crack houses or they would likely re-brand them as "opiate usage centres of excellence."

It is also noteworthy that the OLG is now using conditional language in their discourse around modernization. Numbers are now goals and estimates. That is not the language used in the OLG Modernization Plan. What happens when the OLG not only fails to increase its contribution to the provincial treasury by its stated $1.3 billion but actually begins to return less than it does today? Well, the answer will be nothing as it will all be too late. And who will be held to account? Certainly not Stephen Rigby; he just got there. And Rod Phillips is safely ensconced with Paul Godfrey at the National Post. It will be interesting to see how it all evolves.

    1. Nice wins, interesting format...I have to assume you're playing a lot of volume to show those kinds of wins .Or you're a very lucky person, would you share with us your return on the amount invested because it's difficult to get above a 60%return on most games unless you get lucky and hit some of the bigger wins..

      GL ..nice job

  2. All scratch games suck right now. Ruby, Fortune and DCFL lost too many GP's. I noticed my old favourite game Extraordinaire has yet to surrender a GP since Christmas time. I have a feeling some winners will show up soon. Might have to pick one up but the lotto max and 649 are where my money is going this week.

    1. Tend to agree, Anonymous. The games that I have rated well are all difficult to find. Seems like a good time to invest in a winner take all game.

    2. Doug, that does seem to be the issue quite often when waiting for the float to reduce. Very often there's only one top prize left and tickets might be difficult to find.

Is there a way to "lean into" a particular game before this happens?

In the previous blog entry, I discussed trying to zero in on when a top prize might be "due" based on dividing the float into equal sized top prize sections.

For example, with one top prize gone Fruit Explosion is 19.5% into the 2nd section whose size is 33.3% of the outstanding float (since there are 3 top prizes). D7's, which has 7 top prizes and hence a section size of 14.3% has already sold 15.8% since the last top prize was taken. It has sold a section without giving up a top prize.

      Fruit Explosion (19.5%, 33.3%), QFG (-3.3%, 7.7%), Bingo (13.4%, 10.0%), D7's (15.8%, 14.3%), HTJ (-7.3%, 14.3%), CWT (4.2%, 6.7%), WTA (-1.5%, 14.3%), MM (9.6%, 16.7%) -- A negative number in the first position means a top prize is gone without a section being sold. A first position > a second position means a section has been sold without giving up a top prize.

      Opinions welcomed.

    3. Tommy, I view that style to be more so like a roulette player betting on red because they feel it's due after say 5 black have came up..In a truly random game it could never work like that.Remember the old 1776 lucky lines. .It was something around 20% float left with all top prizes remaining before they pulled it on us..
I wish they would continue to sell games with top prizes remaining until they're all claimed. But olg doesn't like running games for an extended period of time because of the retailers trays getting cluttered with old games and they're all about sales and constantly rolling out new games to keep peoples interest..lol..they have a rule about not pulling games that have a $100k or higher grand prize left but so many times they get pulled because of new games coming out and when sales figures drop off on such games they claim that the public has lost interest and remove it regardless of their own rules. .
I haven't picked up a pack report lately but I figure diamond 7's is soon on the way out because it's getting scarce..I see it in maybe 1 out of 5 retailers and its been out for a while now..

Now imagine if they continued to sell diamond 7's until all the top prizes were claimed. Hmm that would be interesting if it dropped to maybe 2 or 3% float left an a couple grand prizes left..lol..that would become an exciting ticket to go out hunting for..

Also with some reduced float games with a high amount if grand prizes there's always the possibility that a big prize wound up in the trash by mistake or else for some reason a person may sit with a big prize for several months before coming forward to claim it ..lol..

    4. Good counterexample with that old Lucky Lines incident, Darth. And you're absolutely right which is why using this strategy in isolation is not a good idea. Perhaps it works better with games that have a lot of top prizes like Bingo (10) or QFG (13) since it's less likely to have a large number of top prizes hidden in the last remaining section(s) of a game.

And of course, like you said, "late claimers" would wreck havoc with this strategy too.

And yes, the situation would be different if the OLG sold games only until the last prize was claimed.

    5. Tommy & Darth,

I agree with both of you. When an imbalance grows in any particular game, it makes the game a better choice if only to win a Grand Prize. The rating system I employ factors that in. Whether that factoring is too much or not enough is a matter of personal taste.

We also know that the Grand Prizes are not spit out like clockwork. All I can conclude is that I would rather play a game that is overdue for a Grand Prize winner than one that is in the opposite position.

Gagnant a Vie (the Cash for Life equivalent)... 4 winners in 4 days but it seems, once again, a most suspicious distribution of the top prizes. I very much doubt the population and sales of Lanaudiere, Monteregie and Bas-Saint-Laurent match that of Montreal.

If the OLG is employing a similar method of regional distribution, it may be wise to temper one's enthusiasm, especially if one lives in a major urban area.

    1. 4 winners in 4 days, that's awesome! All scratch games should start out like that, then no one will buy the remaining tickets. Anything to screw over the lottery corp.

    2. Although the main point here is we might be able to gain insight into how the top prizes are distributed without having to wait for them to be claimed to get that data.

I think more importantly for scratch players is that there's probably fewer remaining top prizes that are available to you than you think. The geographical physical limitation of playing scratch games.

  4. I'm afraid the OLG Modernization plan may be coming at a bad time. Casino and gaming revenue is struggling (notably Atlantic City) and competition is rising as seen by New York State's plan to open more casinos. Are we also headed into recession. My Canadian indicator (window from the basement with a direct view of the shopping center across the street) says so.

Where will all the new revenue come from?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Right on Tommy. The OLG has all of these fanciful plans that they support with numbers based upon nothing. In my view, folks are already spending what they want on gaming and lotteries. "Modernizing" the approach will not generate new revenue. There is not loose money laying around waiting to be unlocked.

So, if any of their plans succeed, it will be tantamount to robbing Peter to pay Paul. The cost, however, will be high to make the change. Private companies will take over the operation of lotteries and all slot palaces. They will understandably take a bit bite of the profit to pay for their investment. The OLG only makes more money if their reduced slice of the pie is from a much bigger pie. Frankly, I don't see that happening.

      Delete
  5. From the OLG website: "Beginning with the draw on July 17, 2015, the Main Jackpot will be able to reach $60 million instead of the current $50 million."

The problem is, it's the public paying for it!

    The new prize structure:

    7/7: from 87% of the pool fund to 89.25% BUT 6/7+B goes from 4% to 3.15%, 6/7 goes from 4% to 3.35% and 5/7 goes from 5% to 4.25%.

As the prize climbs to $50M, the above reductions are a guaranteed savings for the ILC (Inter-provincial Lottery Corp.). These are guaranteed millions which THEY "win" automatically!

    Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky.

    1. A 60 mill jackpot, that's crazy. I do think the max millions are pointless, because it's still a 1 in 30 million to win a max million. There were on Friday no one had won them. They should do like lotto 649...say when the jackpot reaches 50 million...any max millions should be guaranteed prize draw winners like 649.

      Delete
    2. You're right. Odds of winning the MaxMillions is still around 28M-to-1 even though the prize is just $1M. But the lottery corp. does realize it's the headline numbers that attract the non-player and the occasional player to play. The regulars will always be there. I'm sure they have the sales stats that show them how sales rise exponentially when the top prize gets up there.

That's a good idea to make the MaxMillion prizes guaranteed. Or... scrap the MaxMillions and beef up the secondary prizes with those amounts!

      Delete
    3. True odds for a single line on lotto max to win is more around 85 million to 1, they take that number and divide by 3 because for $5 you get 3 sets of numbers..so it sounds better at 28 million to 1.
I also wish they could make maxmillions a guaranteed prize maybe similar to the 6/49 guarantee prize..
Personally I think even $50 m is an insane amount and wish they would give away bonus prizes when it hits $20m..lol..
but those big jackpots really create excitement and helps their sales figures. .likely $60m will make more sales..
Sounds boring but 60 guaranteed $1m prizes would get most people I know more excited..

      Delete
    4. You're right, Darth. It is 85M-to-1 but I use the quoted 28M-to-1 basically because it's impossible to buy a single combination so if you have to buy 3 lines, your $5 ticket is facing 28M-to-1 odds. Mind-boggling numbers in any case!!

This story is hard to follow. Has the Lottery Corporation said where the winning and uncashed ticket was sold?

    2. So far, BCLC hasn't revealed any information about their investigation.

I just find it odd that while the pool organizer claims he doesn't have the winning ticket, the winning ticket remained unclaimed almost until the one year deadline and when it was finally submitted to BCLC that the holder is now fighting to remain anonymous.

To me the main issue here is how to go about safely organizing or participating in a pool ensuring that those who deserve to collect, do. Of course, it would be nice if the lottery corp. would issue a number of "COPY" tickets as required. That would simply mean that each participant should have a copy beforehand (before the draw) and only those with copies can collect.

  7. A new $3 KENO ticket is now listed on the OLG unclaimed prize page - the prize structure is the same as the current game - there is no fact sheet for it as of yet, so full details are not yet known, once it has, i will post a review - the float on the current game is at 35% with 30% of it's top prizes remaining so it must be a poor seller to warrant releasing this new version now - the current game sucks, in that it only has 6 prizes worth more than $100, within an estimated 1.7 million remaining tickets - the odds to just win more than $25 on it are also crappy, at 1 in 1,550! - i hope the new game has been restructured to have more appeal, but most likley it's going to be "same s**t different pile" (0_o)

    1. Not much change in the >$100 prize categories and with most of OLG's $3 games paying back 65% I think it'll be pretty much a blind dupe of the previous version.

The previous version #1415 is currently showing -15.3%/20.0% (1 top prize left, 35.3% of the float remaining) which might account for sluggish sales although it could just be competition from the other $3 games.

Similarly, CFL4 is -24.6%/25.0%, basically 1 top prize left but 49.6% of the float remaining.

Keno #1416 should be nothing to get excited about.

  14. I was able to get hold of a May "Lottery Retailer Bulletin" - for now, i will just tell you what it says about what new scratch games are coming out this month - they are: $3 Keno, $3 Super Bingo, $4 Cash For Life and $5 Crossword Tripler - the bulletin does state full info on these games so i can post a full review on them - with the 4 new "X The Money" games, which are to be out this Monday, i have to wait for the OLG website to post a fact sheet on them before i can post reviews on them.

    1. Another $4 cfl game is welcome because the dcfl is pretty lame at the moment. Hopefully it's similar to the old bonus cfl .

      Delete
    2. Usually the "Double" or "Bonus" games get the extra bump in total payback from 67% to 70%. Looks like it'll more likely be a regular CFL4 game.

The Super Bingo will probably be set at 67% versus 65% for the usual non-special $3 game so I might be interested in that one for entertainment.

Total payback tends to lift the overall attractiveness of the game simply by making more prize money available. Tends. Of course, if it's too top heavy like DCFL then the regular gameplay will be poor.

  16. As i look at the figures on the upcoming new CFL game, it appears to be structured in between the old CFL and BCFL games and less alike DCFL - the new game stands apart from all the others in that there is much less $10 + $12 prizes and much more $16 + $20 prizes - Here's a comparison look at all 4 versions:

Old CFL / BCFL / DCFL / New CFL
    # of tickets - 8.14M / 9.88M / 9.99M / 7.98M
    Grand Prizes - 3 / 5 / 4 / 3
    $100,000 - 0 / 10 / 0 / 0

    1. Looks like the new cfl will do well on your 2x5x chart. .it appears to be a very good ticket for $16 and $20 wins. .it could quickly become a preffered game if those grand prizes stay on the list for a while. .

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the CFL comparison info, CL66!

Like you noticed, less $10 & $12 prizes, more $16 & $20 prizes. The only question is... will the odds of winning any prize be made worse to pay for this change?

As you may have noticed, the $5 games that do well in the 4x-5x area also have harder odds to win any prize, ie. more losing tickets.

      Delete
  17. Thnx for odds update cl66 and a comparison of the $4 cfl games.

Here's a question for one of the mathematical guru's thats troubled me for years..here goes

With reference to the stated odds on lotto max being approx 28m to 1 for hitting the grandprize my question is are they correct odds or should it be viewed as 3 chances at each chance being 1 in 85m for hitting the grand prize. ..or is it the same thing ?

Same as when we see posted odds on a scratch grandprize..example ;diamond 7's 190,000 to 1 to win a grandprize...
doesn't that mean if you buy one ticket that really the true odds are 2 chances in 380,000 per ticket? ..or mathematicaly it makes no difference how it's viewed?

The lower number certainly sounds better just wondering if it truly is the same from a mathematical standpoint..
    Hopefully someone understood my question

    Thnx

    1. one line is ... 1 in 85m

      three lines are ... 3 in 85 m

there are 85m possible combinations in 7/49

      Delete
    2. That's what I've always suspected that 28m to 1 per $5 play was a way to make it look and sound better than the true odds.
Because no matter how much you spend on lotto max I believe it really is 85m to 1 that one of your lines will hit perfectly. .
I'm a sucker for the big prizes so it still won't stop me from throwing a $20 at it when it's big ..lol..wonder how many people know the true odds. .
      thnx anonymous

      Delete
    3. Darth, it's really the same thing. Yes, each combination has a 1-in-85M odds but since you MUST buy 3 combinations for each $5 ticket, each ticket has a 1-in-28M odds, ie. 85M / 3 = 28.3M.

Or simplifying, imagine a game with 1-in-10 odds. If you must buy 2 combinations per ticket, then the odds of your ticket being the winning one is 1-in-5, each combination covers 5 of the 10 possible outcomes.

I think what you're really asking is, is it right to divide to single combination odds by 3 if you're forced to buy 3 combinations at a time. The answer is yes, it is accurate to divide the 85M by 3 to get 28.3M.

    4. I always find it a little disingenuous when they hide the odds that way. Yeah, it's true but it seems funny that 3 numbers out of 85,900,584 choices suddenly drops to 1 in 28 million when there's still 85,900,581 draws that are losing choices.

I might have the probabilities off but the chance to win for Lotto max

      1 line gives you 0.00000001164 or 0.000001164 %
      3 lines give you 0.00000003492 or 0.000003492 %

It's really tiny. 1 line, 3 lines, 100 lines is not changing things any significant amount.

For example at the start of the game the chance to win $100 on Bejeweled was 0.00667 or 0.667 %. That's in the realm of winning. Still a small chance though.

    5. Im more inclined to agree with Jay..
if odds are 85m-to-1 and they say a $5 play gives you a 28m-to-1 due to getting 3 sets of numbers and I plan on throwing $20 at it for Friday then I will get 12 sets of numbers and judging by their way of doing math I would have reduced my odds to 7m-to-1..
      85m÷12=7. 08m..
or if you spend $40 your odds drop to 3.5m-to-1...
lol...it appears by their math if you spent a few thousand dollars you could almost guarantee a win..lol..we all know it's not that simple. .
..anyway thnx for help on this question and good luck to everyone on this Friday's big draw.

    6. It's an illusion but it's actually true (being able to simply divide the odds like that). What will end up happening is you'll constantly reduce the odds in your favour as you buy more but never to the point where you're guaranteed to win. Of course, it'll get prohibitively expensive and/or not worth the top prize at a certain point too.

Here's another one. I'm 5 years old. My mother is 25. She's 5x my age. In 5 years, I'll be 10 and she will be 30. Now she's only 3x my age. In 15 years, I'll be 20 and she'll be 40, only twice my age. Soon, we'll be the same age and after that I will be older than her!!! Waaaah!!!

Of course, the above will never happen (at least I don't think)....

    7. That's an interesting play on numbers tommy..I've googled this question and it seems that for lotto max odds 1-in28m is the same as 3-in 85m
      ..so both ways are correct.
I've come to the conclusion that my odds winning the big prize are practically the same whether I buy 1 ticket or 10 tickets or "no ticket"..it's very similar odds.

If I miss out on $200 because of my tardiness to the lottery kiosk I will be ticked. On the other hand, if there is an upset and I save $40 I'll be ok with this.

    $1,000 or more - 1 in 245,000
    $5,000 or more - 1 in 490,000
    $50,000 - 1 in 980,000

    Out of all 27 games:
    Ranks 13th on winning $50,000+
    Ranks 18th on winning $5,000+
    Ranks 17th on winning $1,000+
    Ranks 18th on winning $250+
    Ranks 18th on winning $100+
    Ranks 25th on winning $50+
Ranks 18th on winning 2x-5x your $ or better
Ranks 11th on winning a ticket price back
Ranks 12th on winning any prize

The good news: it rates as the 6th best ticket to win 5x or more on your $ (really just $15 on $3) . The bad news: It's the 3rd worst ticket to win $50+ on and the 4th worst game to win 2x or more on your $. This game is essentially the same as the current Keno ticket. You can win 2 times in this game (total of $8 or $13 or $15 at odds of 1 in 42) and 3 times (total of $18 or $23 or $30 at odds of 1 in 400). The prizes, number of prizes, tickets printed and odds are near identical. I rate new $3 Keno a 38/100, making it 17th out of 27 games and 7th out of 10 $3 games.

  22. So I thought I'd check out the Diamond 7's vibe and bought 5 yesterday. And I'm really glad I did! I won on 4 out of the 5. The first one I scratched was a $27x2= $54! Then I had a $27, $7, and $5, for a total of $93. Even though these cards aren't as enjoyable to play (I like the bingo's and crosswords for the "game" component) I have to admit I get a huge thrill when I see the horseshoe symbol, or the star, in Money Multiplier! I like to scratch the whole card first, and then go back to reveal what the mystery prize amount is...suspending the excitement for as long as possible! I will be buying more of these cards today and will post a pic of my big win! ;)
    Good luck, everyone...:)

  24. Fruit explosion lost a top and two 2nd level prizes in past couple days..I was just starting to play that game.

Cadillac had another grand prize claimed in Ontario.

London was where the latest double cfl grand prize winner is from.

  25. I'm glad I stopped playing DCFL months ago since no GP's were anywhere close to Ottawa area. I noticed the Lotto 6/49 super draw is only having a two extra $1 million prizes. I was hoping it would of been like the last one with 58 guaranteed prizes.

    1. More secondary prizes are usually favoured by the players but the OLG knows it's the big headline numbers that draw in paying customers.

Even though there were more secondary guaranteed prizes last time, I believe to total amount of extra cash allocated to those prizes only came out to $649,000 so the expected payback is actually a little more this time.

      Either way, GLTA.
