Cash For Life #1167 Comes From Nowhere To Top The List

The OLG cleared house this week and after all the dust settled, Cash For Life is left occupying the top perch. I have never seen a game move up as significantly over the course of one week. A little over 200,000 tickets were sold last week without revealing the last Grand Prize. Your chances to win that prize are one in 1.9 million which is not very encouraging but the game offers a Top Prize ratio of 1.35 which is the best of any game currently for sale. The game has a Small Prize Payback figure of 57.1% which is .7% below the average of all games.

For those of you who are sitting on the $2 off on a CFL game included in the Gift Pack, you can get good value by using the ticket now rather than waiting for the new version of the game. If you do, check the Outstanding Prize list because if that ticket is redeemed, the game will take a serious hit.

Unfortunately, I can't include a good copy of the ticket as the new CFL game has been listed without the game actually being introduced for sale. It's not your eyes that are giving you problems, it's the file.

Comings and Goings

It was house cleaning week at the OLG. Three $1 games were all retired in addition to Sweet Cash. Of all those games, Bingo Express was the only one that I'm sorry to see go.

No new games were introduced. The total ticket float sits at 90 million which is normal. I expect that our friends will let that drop a bit before the new jumbo CFL game comes on line.

Excellent comments this week by an assortment of commentators. They are informative, helpful, and respectful. I thank all contributors for their effort and wisdom. Special note to Randy for his analysis.

The retirement of Bingo Express is welcome as it allows us to change the channel a bit. I have enjoyed the Spectacular versus Gift Pack debate. For me, neither game is of particular interest at this time but those gift packs do give you lots of tickets to scratch plus $2 off on what is now the top rated game. Still, the Grand Prize situation is of concern....

An interesting article that speaks to the elasticity of funds being expended on all kinds of gaming: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/daily-fantasy-sports-spend-impacting-lottery-casino-play-538475311.html . I'm not sure if fantasy sports games takes away from lottery play or not. Lets remember that the OLG undertook its entire Modernization plan with the projection that, once completed, it would increase its contribution to the Provincial Treasury by over $1 billion per year. I've always wondered what they will say when it doesn't happen. Maybe excuses like the one above will make it into their speaking points.

News also from the OLG that progress is being made on the Northern and South Western bundles.

http://www.saultstar.com/2015/11/24/final-step-before-service-provider-chosen-to-run-certain-day-to-day-gaming-operations-for-regional-gaming-bundles

The Northern Bundle returned total revenue of $30 million in the first quarter of 15/16. Roughly the equivalent of the slots at Ajax Downs. With three existing points and the potential to build two new facilities in North Bay and Kenora, I am curious to learn how much a private contractor will pay for the right to invest and share profits. I cannot see how the OLG will ever see an increase in returns from this area. The South Western bundle returned $56 million or roughly the equivalent of the slots at Georgian Downs. In total the nine locations and potentially two new ones represented 17% of the total OLG returns.

And lastly, Tommy Middle Finger has indicated that his time spent entertaining us with his insights and analysis (all done with panache) will be reduced in the future due to competing priorities. See his post at the end of last weeks comments. Tommy has made this board much better than it would otherwise have been. I thank him for sharing his wisdom and sense of humour with us.

  1. I find it funny how different people have different luck with tickets. I just looked at my spreadsheet and I'm 11/20 on Merry Money and 7/15 on Holiday Spectacular, despite some people commenting on this blog having exact opposite results. And for the benefit of those who need photo proof (my recent Poker All-In flush makes an appearance too): http://i.imgur.com/xosI6UH.jpg

Sadly that number of wins on those tickets only essentially won me my money back, when all is said and done. Better than my luck with Diamond Payout, which I was "tricked" into buying one more of this week (I was looking for Holiday Spectacular but they didn't have any, but had one Diamond so I said what the hey). I'm now 0/8 on those dreadful tickets!

Best of luck to everyone, especially to those of you in the 6/49 draw in 5 minutes! Sad to see TMF leaving us for a while, I enjoyed his commentary!

    1. I won $100 on an Instant Gift Pack. I've now lost 8 in a row after that. Everyone else I talk to apparently at least breaks even on every pack! I don't get it.

    1. Yeah the first #s are 1234..
I'm in a small lotto pool with a few people and one if our group plays the # 1,2,3,4,5,49. So we hit a 4 number prize off him..

Also Ontario received 13 $10k prizes
3 $100k prizes and we also received the $1m guaranteed prize on the super draw.

    2. Hey Darth, all of those Ontario prizes went to the GTA, trying to boost the housing market down there.

  3. I won $100 on the Christmas gift pack the other day, wooooo!

    I can provide a picture ;)

    I have bought about 15 of them, won $10, 10, 10, 15 and $100.

I am inclined to keep buying them from different locales as I seem to be having good luck.

    1. Well done Dan..I'm just curious if it was a prize from a single ticket in the pack or was multiple winners on several tickets totalling $100 ?
And yeah if the game is working for you then I would continue rolling with it.
My wife likes $3 frosty..she keeps hitting a bunch of little prizes and almost free rolling through a bunch of tickets.

    2. Thanks Darth,

The $100 win was a result of multiple wins from the same pack!

I looked up there odds, I think it was 1 in 1019 or something, won on 5/6 games.

  4. Doug,
I think you mean for everyone to keep the $2 coupon for CFL and use it on the new CFL game coming out. The new CFL will have odds of 1 in 1.5 million of getting the grand prize. Whereas, the current CFL you stated is 1 in 1.9 million to get the last remaining prize.

I have some choice words for the superdraw. I bought two separate tickets with 10 plays each (2 x$30). As I stated on last weeks blog, 98% of the superdraws contain -01 to -02. To increase my odds, I should of split my plays up into a bunch of separate tickets. Beyond the -02 are wasted numbers for the superdraw.

    1. I have to laugh that u made the same logical fallacy about the guaranteed prize draw last week. Someone explained to you in a reply why it was wrong and yet you make the same fallacy again.

I dont feel like typing out an explanation for why this is a fallacy because Randy explained it nicely in his post last week but suffice to say playing 30 tickets with 1 GPD number each does not increase your odds over 2 tickets with 15 GPD numbers at all.

If you want to believe that 30 seperate tickets makes u more likely to win then you are free to. After all 30x1 tickets is the same cost as 2x15 and it's not like you are decreasing your odds so it's no harm if it is simply your superstition. However when you said such an action would increase your odds is simply incorrect and i just had to reply because i can't stand seeing such an incorrect mathematical statement stand in such a usually smart comment thread

    2. My sentiments exactly Joe - since the majority of tickets sold are single tickets, -1 would naturally appear more often - the guaranteed draws are essentially a raffle with ANY ticket entered having an equal chance, regardless of how many lines per ticket - it is a bonus that all 54 extra draws are guaranteed winners at no extra charge, but of course, the odds are still huge to win any of them.

    3. I'm thinking it's the "anon theory" guy stirring the pot again.
Last weeks post by Randy was spot on..because I dusted off my abacus and double checked his math..it was correct as can be..thnx Randy.

How ever with regards too the current CFL game I think I'll wait and let the float reduce a bit more or just simply wait for the new version to be released.

  5. so that 6 Triple 7s now for me without a win, not really liking that ticket, and about 4 or 5 merry money ones without a win either, this down swing is lasting quite a while, lol

also ive been buying aces and 8s when i see them ( i know, i know) against my better judgement, thats 3 now without a winner, I had a dream where i was scratching a gold ticket and it had aces on it though i couldnt see the name, so ive been trying those.

Ill probably be taking a break for a bit, lol, just play a poker ticket from time to time for a little while.

  7. Doug, I read that link about sports betting and fantasy games, and it is interesting.

As some have posted on here, it is intriguing when you see names on the OLG winners lists, with multiple prizes in proline and pointspread and propicks, sometimes the same names showing up a few times per year or more. Are there smart sports gamblers making a living this way? It almost seems so.

What do these people do to win, how much are they playing and losing as well, and should I consider doing likewise are some obvious questions.....

For some perspective, I did a quick scan of two days of winners this week, almost exactly 200 in total as it turns out, I may be off by one or two.

19 were instant scratch winners, about 10%

71 were sports lottery winners, about 35%

The rest were lotto games, keno etc...

(These are percentages of numbers of winners, not prize payouts, so probably lotto games involve a much bigger percentage of cash rewards with their occasional big winners)

So even with the formal OLG, sports is a big deal, much more than it used to be. Add in online gaming, and indeed it could appear this will suck interest away from the other games and casinos. People only have so much money, less so if the doomers are correct who say our economy has some big bumps ahead.

What Doug's link also points out is how much TIME sports betters are using up, watching sports games, checking blog sites etc.... Personally, I can't imagine right now using up so much time following this hobby.

But maybe these sports betters re geniuses making a living at this?

Anyone here have any perspective/experience/overall success with sports/fantasy betting?

    Curious to know......

    1. Randy,
      Good research.

The problem that I have with Pro Line is the the size of the House Take. It's way too large. As a result, I may play a $3 ticket and treat it much like a Scratch Ticket. I too wonder about the folks that cash several times for large amounts of money. For them, accepting the OLG line is a sure fired way to go broke quickly.

The problem with sites like Draft Kings is that smaller, occasional players are sure to lose when up against the sharpies. It's much like on line poker. To have any chance to succeed you would have to dedicate much more of your life to the pursuit than almost anyone is willing to do.

Additionally, you have to deal with the scandals of insider wins. How did it happen? Well, the public tends to have a herd mentality. If you know where the herd is going them by going against the herd you can set up value outcomes. It's like playing the horses - it's not the horse that is the most likely winner that you want to back, it's the horse whose odds are greater than its actually chances of winning. Thus, when you do win the payoff is very attractive. That's what the insiders at Draft Kings were doing.

I know a chap who used to make money betting Quebec's version of pro-line in its early days. That lottery used to set their basketball lines at the start of the week. He would wait for injuries that caused the Vegas lines to move during the week then bet in the direction of the move. As a result, he might gain 4 points in the move of a line. He made a lot of money exploiting that gap. After a bit, Quebec switched to providing lines the day before games instead of a week before. That decision precipitated this individual move back to Toronto.

    2. Doug,

A little bored this week, I googled the names of a couple of those new and repeat sports winners on the OLG website.

The first name, it turned out, had been arrested in 2012 for possession of $150,000 of marijuana in his car and had several stories about his criminality on the web.

So maybe that explains how the repeat sports betting winners find all the time to manage their hobby - they have a reliable source of secondary income, LOL!

  14. While the new $4 Cash For Life ticket has been available for sale since Thursday, i have not yet seen it for sale in my area of Scarborough.

My regular retailer has their sealed packs of the new $30 Golden Treasures ticket and the game will be available for sale Monday.

3 tickets were deactvated yesterday, $3 Keno (purple) $5 $500 Frenzy and $5 Crossword Tripler (purple). Only opened/loose tickets may now be sold until these tickets are reclaimed by the OLG and they will be retired on December 28th.

Previously deactivated $2 10X The Money & $5 Aces & 8's will be retired this Monday and $2 Fast $200s & $3 Super Bingo will be retired December 21st.

The only new game sheduled for release is $3 Scrabble #1861 on December 7th.

I've gone thru 10 + 2 free gift packs now - i saved the coupons till i had $10 worth and exchanged them for a gift pack twice - so my actual cost was $100 - i won $80 in total on 5 of the 12: $10 x 2, $15, $20 and $25, so my net cost has been only $20 - while the coupon is meant for the Cash For Life ticket, if your on good terms with your retailer, they willl accept them for $2 off anything - it doesn't hurt to just ask a retailer, they receive $2 credit for every coupon and they do NOT have to prove to the OLG it was used for a CFL ticket - the new CFL game i rate as the 3rd worst out of all 30 games and the current CFL game i rate as 17th, so i`d rather use the $2 coupon on anything else - the new format of the CFL game, if it sells well, could mean we may no longer see the previous versions again - that the number of tickets is 15.4 million most likely means this game will be made available for a long time, perhaps an entire year, thus reducing how often we get to see any CFL game.

Interesting. Never would have thought of doing that. Thanks. Why is the new CFL rated so low on your ratings?

    2. As you know, i grade a tickets grand prizes with being a small part of an overall score - as once odds reach a level of some 200,000+:1, i find them to be of little relevance - to me it's misguided to value most whats almost near impossible to win - still, i would love to win a grand prize and i won't buy a ticket without any being available - so i look to what else a ticket offers and in my number crunch, thats 12 different levels weighted more towards what's likely - here's currently how the new CFL game rates out of all 30 games on:

      Odds to win $50K+ 19th
      Odds to win $5K+ 22nd
      Odds to win $1K 23rd
      Odds to win $250+ 20th
      Odds to win $100+ 28th
Odds to win 8-10x+ on your $ 28th
Odds to win 6-8x+ on your $ 26th
      Odds to win 5x+on your $ 9th
Odds to win 4x+ on your $ 20th
Odds to win 3x+ on your $ 8th
Odds to win 2x+ on your $ 26th
Odds to win any prize 25th

Sadly, out of 12 categories, it ranks below average in nearly 10 of them! - this is why i rate the game so poorly at 31/100 - the current game i rate at 45/100 is better, even having just a single grand prize available - to make the new games 10 grand prizes possible meant they gutted the game of most of it usual prizes and also there's nearly twice as many tickets as before - unless the odds improve dramaticly on it's grand prizes, i won't buy a single ticket.

    3. I will be interested to see how my formula rates the game. If the game is simply too top end weighted towards the Grand Prizes, then I would normally go all the way and buy lotto tickets.

  16. Looks like Ontario cleaned up on the 649 super draw. 29 out of 49 $10,000 prizes and 3 out of 6 $100,000 prizes plus the $1,000,000 guaranteed prize. More reason for us to be hated, LOL. I always figure that our ticket sale mirror our population percentage, i.e. about 38% of Canada, but draws like this make me wonder if certain provinces play more proportionately. I can only find data on national 649 sales, not Ontario's. Anybody have more province-specific data?

    Anyway, good luck to everyone!

(Interestingly, the jackpot did not even make it to the $20,000,000 advertised. Sales fell below expectations once again. A trend continues)

Thanks CL66 for your idea about cashing in the $2 coupon - I will try that .

    1. Rabdy,
I expect that sales by business line and by province should be available although you may have to submit a FOI application to get the information. It's easy to make assumptions about the buying patterns of urban vs rural and province by province but they might be wrong. Best to get the information and know for sure. A new project for me ......

    2. Go for it, Doug! The sales data would be a goldmine for players to figure out more about what the real odds are.

For now, I usually see the Lottery Canada website posts national sales figures, though not sure where they get them.

      Delete
    3. Since Ontario receives almost half of the distribution of national scratch tickets, I would assume that we also buy pretty close to the same ratio of national lottery tickets.

    4. All I have to say, is how did the prairies clean up for 2nd place with all those guaranteed prizes...the prairies has population 5 people compared to everywhere else. These guaranteed prizes are not randomly drawn..OLG trying to boost up places again out in the middle of nowhere.

Also, if you look on the 'recent winners' section on OLG. The first 3 people are major winners in Woodstock and in Sarnia (industrial belt)...just proves my point even further. OLG is nothing but a scam. Save your money and go to the roulette table.

    1. Jason, I bought two of those $30 tickets today (first one to buy from the new pack they had) and one Extreme Millions. Those $30 tickets are huge.. physically lol...about 1 inch longer then the Extreme ticket. I guess the higher the price, the bigger the ticket. Here's how I did:

      250 Million: $60
      250 Million: $0
      Extreme Million: $20

So, I broke even. A ticket costing $30 is pretty damn pricey since the odds of winning a prize are just 1 in 3.55. Whereas, Extreme Millions is 1 in 3.00. I still have not found any new CFL, the retailer I go to has a boat load of the old CFL still.

  19. The new $3 "Winter Words" Crossword ticket has been restructured compared to previous versions. This version has 28% less tickets than the current regular version. There is usually 10/10/10/10 of the top 4 prizes and the new version has 9/9/6/6. The odds had previously been the same with all prizes offered by numerous Crossword editions, but that has now changed. Here is a look at the odds to win all specific prizes offered by the current game versus the new game so that you can see the differences. The odds for $50 and $100 prizes have dramaticly changed for the worse.

    --- prize ---- current game / winter words --
    $50,000 - 1 in 2,035,320 / 1 in 1,632,556
    $25,000 - 1 in 2,035,320 / 1 in 1,632,556
    $10,000 - 1 in 2,035,320 / 1 in 2,448,833
    - $5,000 - 1 in 2,035,320 / 1 in 2,448,833
    ---- $100 ------- 1 in 2,000 / 1 in 5,384
    ------ $50 ------ 1 in 1,000 / 1 in 2,745
    ------ $25 --------- 1 in 127 / 1 in 140
    ------ $15 ----------- 1 in 17 / 1 in 14
    -------- $5 ----------- 1 in 13 / 1 in 16
    -------- $3 ------------- 1 in 9 / 1 in 11
    any prize --------- 1 in 3.84 / 1 in 4.25

A "number crunch" on "Winter Words" scores 48/100, making it 15th out of 32 games and 5th out of 10 $3 tickets - it's $15 prize is it's biggest plus, as odds for a 5x+ win on this game rank #1 out of all 32 games, at odds of 1 in 12.43 - it's biggest negative is it odds of 1 in 4.25 to win any prize, as that's the 3rd worst out of all 32 games.

  21. Question to Doug, How are you calculating the float left for instant games and how many tickets they sold throughout the week as stated in your opening paragraph in regards to CFL?

Can you please use your equation for the Extreme Millions game!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Remaining Float = (Total Top Prizes Remaining/Total Top Prizes) x Initial Float

    For Extreme as of Nov 24 = (401/483) x 14,898,250 = 12,368940*

To be precise, we should say +/- 4% 19 times in 20.

Tickets sold last week = Remaining Float last update - Remaining Float today.

Hope that helps. These numbers are estimated. The larger the number of listed top prizes, the greater the accuracy.

    Grand prize: 10 x $2,500,000
    Next top prizes: 5 x $250,000 / 5 x $25,000 / 20 x $2,500 / 1,030 x $1,000
    Mid level prize: $500
    Low level prizes: $250 / $100 / $70 / $60 / $50 / $40 / $30
    Number of tickets: 12,360,000 (Ontario 62.5% 7,725,000)

    Odds to win:
    any prize - 1 in 3.55
    $40 or more - 1 in 4.04
    $50 or more - 1 in 4.34
    $60 or more - 1 in 6.89
    $70 or more - 1 in 9.88
    $100 or more - 1 in 9.98
    $250 or more - 1 in 4,909
    $500 or more - 1 in 8,334
    $1,000 or more - 1 in 11,551
    $2,500 or more - 1 in 309,000
    $25,000 or more - 1 in 618,000
    $250,000 or more - 1 in 824,000
    $2,500,000 - 1 in 1,236,000

    Out of all 32 games:
    Ranks 13th on winning $50,000+
    Ranks 23rd on winning $5,000+
    Ranks 1st on winning $1,000+
    Ranks 2nd on winning $250+
    Ranks 1st on winning $100+
Ranks 30th on winning 8-10x your $ or better
Ranks 31st on winning 6-8x your $ or better
Ranks 32nd on winning 5x your $ or better
Ranks 32nd on winning 4x your $ or better
Ranks 3rd on winning 3x your $ or better
Ranks 7th on winning 2x your $ or better
Ranks 14th on winning any prize

The good news: Odds of 1 in 10 to win $100. The bad news: it costs $30 a ticket and the odds to win anything more than $100 are 1 in 4,909, so it's an expensive way to just win 3.3x on your $. While it's the #1 ticket on odds to win $1,000+, the odds for such are 1 in 11,551. If you uncover a “Diamond Ring” symbol, at odds of 1 in 30, you win $100. You can win up to 3 times on this ticket. Win 2 Times at odds of 1 in 26 (87.5% $60, 2.5% $70, 10% $100 and odds of 1 in 60,000 to win $500). Win 3 Times at odds of 1 in 263 (98.5% $100, 1.5% $250). With odds of 1 in 3.55 to win anything for $30 and $100 being the most your likely to win, i wouldn't buy this ticket. I rate $30 $250 Million Golden Treasures 50/100, making it 14th out of all 32 tickets.

  26. Insider scam..been going on for decades. Some retailers X-ray the scratch and win tickets and pass the big winners off to their friends. I used to remember way back in the day in the 90's, if you bought a scratch ticket and held it up to a really bright light, you could see what was on the ticket without even scratching it. But obviously in this era, they resolved that situation.

  30. Played one of those $30 tickets earlier, just to say that I played one, lol, probably wont get any more as thats 6 $5 tickets for the same price, doesnt seem like a good value to me. I feel like id be luckier hitting something on atleast one of 6 $5 tickets, not to say that its a bad game, Id expect to hit something if I got 6 of these $30 tickets too, lol, but then of course 6 of those would be 180 bucks and thats 36 $5 tickets, so yeah, still not a good value, lol.

I feel like that may be an issue that the olg faces with these tickets, I could get 1 $30 ticket, or a $20 ticket and a $10 for that price, or 3 $10 tickets, or any variation in between. Its weird to pull the trigger one 1 ticket vs 6, when some of the lower tickets your chances are better.

I did however see the new cash for life tickets over there so Ill probably cash in some of these gift pack coupons at some point, we lost one of ours cause the lady scanned it, then noticed she didnt have any of the tickets, and she said it wouldnt let her apply it to anything else, so she told us to come back when they do have them and she would remember, but it wont let her scan the thing again, lol.

Today I won $30 off a Christmas gift pack and was tempted to try a $30 ticket..then I stopped and thought the most likely thing would be 1 minute scratching then $30 in the trash..

    4. I know what you guys are talking about. I was thinking about buying my wife a $30 ticket for a stocking stuffer, which is 10 times the price of the stocking itself. But I'm kind of allergic to dropping 30 smackers on a ticket that takes 30 seconds to scratch. The only way I'd ever buy one of them is as a gift. That makes it a now or never deal. She likes Cross Trips so maybe I'll go that way. We will see.

    5. 6 Crossword Triplers is a pretty good amount though, maybe someone else could tell you an actual comparison but Id say your chances would be better with 6 Crosswords than 1 $30 ticket.

  31. I finally cleaned out all the Scrabble tickets in my area. I couldn't bring myself to buying a dozen at once but over the past few weeks I did end up with almost all of them. I won $3 and $5 today on the last two and nothing on the previous ones.

I hit a dry spell with the Wild Card too (4 losers in a row) so I tried the Cash For Life after seeing the post and won $20. Bought two more and they were losers. I also grabbed a green Crossword and won $25. I don't keep track of all the tickets I buy, but I did throw out $36 worth of losing tickets today that I had been accumulating over the past few weeks.

I wanted to start playing some of the Proline games since I always do great in my free fantasy sports leagues (because I am anal and research everything to death and come on blue always beats brown haha) but the comments about the odds being so crappy had me putting the kibosh on that idea.

    1. Alicia with regards to your comment on sports betting what olg offers isn't all bad.
I dabble in point spread from time to time but online sports books offer far superior odds that I can't see why people bother with it other than just a recreational wager.
Proline was much better years ago before they revamped the whole system and I never bother with it any more although there are a few select times a week if you're sharp you can get a better line than the vegas line...the problem is by having to choose 3 games minimum is that your other selections are going to be poor value..

Pools on the otherhand can payoff at decent and sometimes amazing odds..for instance the sunday nfl pool is by far the best followed by Saturday N.H.L. .
Unless someone corrects me.. the odds on correctly guessing the outcome of 10 sport events that are all 50/50 chances are 1024 to 1 so for a $5 wager on say 10 nhl games on a Saturday pools ticket you would hope too see a $5k payout and it is usually quite higher than that in Sat.

Also because you obviously know a bit about sports your odds are already better than 50/50 and if you have a big bankroll you could start boxing games. .box 4 games $80, box 5 $160, $320,$640..and so on..
Oh I better mention I have a sports book account that has $0 in it because after a huge roller coaster ride it finally tanked on me..I've also lost more on point spread than I care to mention and I've never won a pools either..
So I pretty much suck at sports betting but I just wanted too point out that there is some value in the Olg pools offerings..

Good luck to you and everyone
