Cross Tripler #1791 - Long In The Tooth but Still On Top

Sales have stalled for the top rated game due to the scarcity of tickets left to be purchased. Given that the game's deactivation date was Feb 6th we can expect it to be deleted from the Outstanding Prize listing shortly. Four $100,000 winning tickets remain outstanding and only an estimated 11% of the float remains to be sold. Pick them up, if you can find them.

(Orange version of the game depicted below)

CROSSWORD TRIPLER

Top Rated Games

  1. $5 Cross Tripler #1791 - A strong choice. Worth the search for tickets.
  2. $10 Classic Ruby #1792 - Best churn for any current game and a positive top prize rating.
  3. $5 Diamond 7's #1822 - 60.6% churn and a 1.29 positive top prize rating.
  4. $5 20X Lucky #1808 - 4 of 7 Top prizes remain and only 26% of the float.
  5. $3 QFG Crossword #3208 - New game has a very high churn rate.

Games to Avoid

  1. $4 Double Cash For Life #1170 - The most top heavy game just lost a grand prize.
  2. $2 Black Jack #1804 - All three remaining Grand Prizes claimed last week. A dud as of now.
  3. $10 Bejeweled #1786 - Poor churn and 1/2 the grand prizes gone in 1st 1/3 of float.
  4. $3 Scrabble #1821 - Top 4 prize categories all claimed. Largest prize left is $5000.
  5. $3 More Lucky Lines #1794 - Game becomes less horrible as it winds down. Still horrible.

Games with most $/dollar spent going to Grand Prize Winners

  1. Bonus Cash For Life #1168
  2. Double Cash For Life #1170
  3. 20X Lucky #1808
  4. Cross Tripler #1791
  5. Fortune #1779

Games Currently Devoid of Grand Prizes

  • Scrabble #1821 - largest prize left is $5000
  • Words With Friends #1798 - largest prize left is $25,000
  • More Lucky Lines #1794 - largest prize left is $5000
  • Black Jack #1804 - largest prize left is $1000

Comings and Goings

Royal 7's was retired. It had 1 Grand Prize remaining and 19% of its float (593,000 tickets). The game was rated as a poor choice.

New is Instant Bingo. It is a $3 - 9.5 million ticket float game with 10 Grand Prizes of $50,000. There is a "fast win" prize of $15 available (1 in 50 tickets) and multiple win tickets. The payout return is 65.07% which is the third highest for $3 games.

I'm not a big fan of these types of games but they are very popular among Instant Game players. To me, a 950,000 to 1 shot to win $50,000 is not enticing. The churn rate for the game is also only average.

Personal Play

My "annus horribulus" continues with a meagre $10 return last week on $50 worth of tickets. My overall return YTD is 44% with the raffle game investment yet to be determined. I'm going to play another $50 this week just to get my numbers up to poor from terrible - I hope.

In Conclusion

I have once again tweaked my rating system. I credit the readers and commentators to this blog for helping me refine in my own mind what it is that I am looking for in a game. My rating system now involves two factors:

  1. The churn rate of the game. This is represented by the percentage of total revenue for the game that  is returned to winners of less than $100. These are the prizes that are not listed on the Outstanding Prize list. This number never changes throughout the life of the game.
  2. The top prize imbalance. I calculate the cash value of all the prizes listed on the outstanding prize list and calculate the percentage of prizes left versus the amount when the game began. I then do the same for the actual number of prizes claimed versus how many there were to begin with.

I then divide the former number by the latter to determine if there is an imbalance between the two. If 50% of the top prizes have been claimed but only 40% of the cash value of those prizes has been claimed, the game will have a positive rating of 1.20 (60/50).

Lastly, I combine the two factors in my secret formula to determine the final rating for the game. My comments in the future will relate to "churn" and "ratio". This is the shorthand for the two factors described above.

Here is an interesting lottery story for readers to skim: http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/1494415/-i-m-just-here-to-help-leamington-resident-plans-to-donate-250-000-top-prize-from-instant-cadillac-riches-win . (A neighbour of Darth's, no doubt).

Can you smell the spring? Its coming.

  1. 1. QFG Crossword #3208 finally makes Doug's list! This game is selling fast with almost 6% gone already. With 13 top prizes, expect (not guaranteed!) one to be gone by the 7.7% mark.

    2. Doug said "annus"... LOL!

    3. Churning is not only for making butter.

    4. A call out to all readers of this blog who play QFG Crossword #3208, please keep track of your payback percentage (total winnings divided by cost) for this game only and report it here on occasion. Thanks in advance.

    5. Yes, I do know what "annus horribulus" means but I still refuse to live in Regina, Sask.

    2. Tommy,

Well, looks like the game topped out at #5 in that case. I bought two and they were both losers. One was particularly annoying: three of the first four letters I scratched were vowels. In the end, 14 of the 16 words in the puzzle contained the letter "A". Guess which vowel was not one of those three...

    3. That happens. Key consonants missing or key vowels missing. Guess that's one way to generate "Anticipatory Excitement".

Still, in the short run and unless playing thousands of tickets, it really boils down to luck. I blew close to two weeks allowance last week and my luck has been terrible getting back only 22%. Now running at 57% return on QFG. Probably not a bad idea to ease up with two top prizes gone though.

  2. So far, I have bought one QFG and it won me $15! I thought I had 3 words, for $5, but when I cashed it in, I was happily surprised to have won $10 more than I thought. :)

  4. I won't even buy a QFG ticket:

Only 10 different prizes - tied for 2nd least amount out of all tickets
Odds of 1 in 3.87 to win any prize - are the worst out of all the $3 tickets
    If i could get a win - $3 or $5 most of the gets boring - it's 1 in 27 to win $15
Odds of 1 in 1,867 to win $50
Odds to win more than $100 1 in 487,366
Odds to win 1 of the 11 remaining grand prizes of $50,000 1 in 2,215,301
    Estimated remaining tickets 24,368,316

    1. I'll play devil's advocate here, CL66, if you don't mind:

      1. 10 different prizes - Can't really argue here. I guess more categories would make the game play more varied and enjoyable.

      2. 1-in-3.87 odds to win any prize. Well, I have had luck winning games with 1-in-4+ odds and no luck with games with better than 1-in-3.3 odds. I guess with a small sample size, results can vary greatly. Like you said, most people won't even play 100 times a particular games during its run.

      3. 1-in-27 to win $15. Better than the 1-in-50 of Scrabble's "Fast 15". And with a 1-in-45 chance of hitting $25, much better than Scrabble's "Fast 15".

      4. 1-in-1867 odds to win $50, 1-in-487,336 odds to win $100 or more. $50/$100 are fixed numbers and these categories don't take into account the cost of a ticket. Winning $50 on a $3 game is 16x-17x prize/feat compared to a 5x prize for a $10 game. Comparing more fairly, the 5x prize on this game, as stated in point #3 above, is 1-in-27.

      5. Odds of winning 1 of remaining grand prizes is a whopping 1-in-2.2M+. I totally AGREE with you. Two happy people out there disagree with both of us. Sniff.

Good luck. Nice win on that All-In by the way!

    3. A fair comaprison then, would be against the other $3 games - $50 or + win: QFG rates 7th out of 9 $3 games - $100 or + win: QFG rates 5th out of 9 $3 games - again, odds to win any prize QFG comes in last place - the only + thing i see with this game is if you can snag a $15 win - $3 Wheel Of Fortune comes out tomorrow and i sense it may even take the #1 spot for a $3 ticket - if it just rates well, it will lower my rating on QFG to 20th out of the 27 games and 8th out of 10 $3 games - i'd prefer i was wrong and everyone here who plays it does well, but from my perspective, i don't see that happening.

      Delete
    4. The problem with $3 games, at present, is that most of them have a ratio of top prizes won versus $ for top prizes won of less than 1.00. QFG Crossword was at 1.03 as of the last update. Now that two Grand Prizes has been claimed I doubt that I'll be buying any more.

      Interesting discussion.

  5. Topics of small prize payback percentage is of great interest to me.I haven't played much volume lately but it's the way to buy large amounts of tickets at discounted prices, sometimes 60 % off..So by combining a game with a good small prize payback % along with a decent grand prize to float ratio is decent formula for someone who buys in volume..problem is my preffered games keep getting deactivated..sigh..
..Joan Ginther from texas should be "googled" by volume players ..although she never let out her secrets she won several multi million dollar scratch off prizes from what people speculate was doing extreme volume buying of tickets at likely greater than a 60% discount by rolling all small prizes back into more tickets. .I have done this in the past also on a much smaller scale than Joan and with no success at hitting a grand prize. .lol..but yes I have played greater than $500 worth of the preffered games at less than $200 out of pocket money..
It's still a loss but an awful lot of kicks at the cat at a nicely reduced cost. .
know your limit play within it. .

The guy from Leamington not sure what to think about that donating his whole grand prize to a school his kids attend..that poor kid is likely going to be bullied..Or Leamington is suffering from high unemployment and is that not kinda kicking your neighbor when hes down..people having a tough go and he's like I don't need it I'll just donate it..why not do it annonomously with no fan fare..it's a great gesture..maybe I'm jealous when someone well to do for jackpots..lol..I love the stories of hard luck people or hard working guys and single mothers winning big..

    2. The story of that woman has always intrigued me Tommy. As I recall, she won those prizes in different cities in Texas and she was a statistician by profession. Curious.

It's actually because of her that I suspect that the distribution of Grand Prize winning tickets may not be "random" in the way that you or I may understand the word to mean. That is not to say that there is even a hint of corruption but only that perhaps Ms. Ginther detected a pattern that was missed by others.

  7. $3 WHEEL OF FORTUNE - Review

    Grand prize: 3 x $75,000
    Next top prizes: 9 x $5,000 - 54 x $1,000
    Mid level prize: $100
    Low level prizes: $25 / $10 / $6 / $3 / $2 Wheel Of Fortune lotto ticket
    Number of tickets: 2,529,800

    Odds to win:
    any prize - 1 in 3.03
    $3 or more - 1 in 3.48
    $6 or more - 1 in 7.04
    $9 or more - 1 in 11.98
    $10 or more - 1 in 18.21
    $12 or more - 1 in 20.05
    $16 or more - 1 in 43.98
    $25 or more - 1 in 762
    $100 or more - 1 in 2,611
    $1,000 or more - 1 in 38,330
    $5,000 or more - 1 in 210,817
    $75,000 3 - 1 in 843,267

    Out of all 27 games:
    Ranks 12th on winning $50,000+
    Ranks 6th on winning $5,000+
    Ranks 7th on winning $1,000+
    Ranks 14th on winning $250+
    Ranks 15th on winning $100+
    Ranks 25th on winning $50+
Ranks 7th on winning 2x-5x your $ or better
Ranks 2nd on winning a ticket price back
Ranks 2nd on winning any prize

The good news: it has the 2nd best odds out of all 27 games to win any prize - 2nd best odds on winning your ticket price back - for a $3 ticket, it offers the best odds to win $1,000+ and $50,000+ - it's the best $3 ticket on rating to win 2x-5x+ on your $. The bad news: only 12 different prizes with just 4 above $25 - only 12 prizes in total above $1,000. Gameplay on this ticket is similiar to Cashingo, which i personally never liked, i was hoping for something different so it would have more appeal. You can win up to 3 times on this ticket. One of the prizes is a $2 Wheel Of Fortune lotto ticket which comes at odds of 1 in 23.44. Perhaps this "watch-n-win" game isn`t doing as well now as the OLG would like if they are giving these out here. At the bottom of the ticket is a "Bonus Area" game where you attempt to match 3 symbols, at odds of 1 in 218, to win $3 (50%), $6 (30%), $10 (15%) or $25 (5%). I rate this game a 63/100, making it 7th out of the 27 games and as the best $3 ticket.

I picked up 3 of them today and scratch one of them then took the other two back to the store and scratched the code and self checkered them..won $12..
I guess for us that like the $3 games it may be the best choice for now..

    2. Small Prize info for WoF #1809 (47 Games): 1-in-3.13 Hit Rate, 59.410% Payback. Decent numbers for play time. Still, a game I probably won't be playing for the following reasons:

      1. When I play an Instant game, I prefer not to have to wait to see if I won so I don't like these 'hybrid' Instant-Draw games. Like CL66 says, maybe a way to promote the regular WoF terminal game.

      2. I assign a value of $2 to the WoF quick pick prize. I don't like games where there's a prize category is less than the cost of a ticket. Mind as well go back to issuing me "free ticket"s.

But again, in my opinion a decent game for play time and if you're lucky a $75,000 payback versus $50,000 for most $3 games.

I was doing really well like in the + (making some money) until a got a little greedy and bought 19 $5 crossword orange. That only returned me $35. For the most part those crossword orange tickets have been very good to me. I've hit at least 4 $20 on the left side and 3 $30 winners and a few $30, $20,$10 winners from the crossword itself. The last 2 weeks have been terrible as I haven't hit anything. I've slowed down my play considerably as I was spending most of my cash on those $5 crossword orange tickets. I figure to date I've scratched about $40 crossword orange tickets.

  11. CL66 or Doug, what about playing only Provincial games rather than the interprovincial games, as I think playing only games where you know the possiblility of a grand prize winning ticket is in every outlet you visit within the province versus only possibly having 1/4 to 1/2 of the grand prizes being available in your province as it is random where the prizes are located

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've always thought that was a downside to IP games. The OLG unclaimed prizes site doesn't offer enough information. You could be playing a game with no top prizes left.

I think one "safe" way to play IP is to stop once the number of top prizes claimed equals the initial top prize allocation to your province. For example, if Ontario was allocated 4 of the top 12 prizes and 4 top prizes have been claimed, I would stop since all of the claimed prizes could possibly be from the same province.

      Delete
    2. I know that some players share your concern but I have never really subscribed to it. For an interprovincial game Canada is the territory rather than Ontario and, if you believe that the Grand Prizes are truly distributed randomly, Ontario could get more or less than its share. That said, I am swayed by Tommy's point.

The thing I don't like about these games is that they often only report prizes of $1000 or more and only do so once a week. With so few prizes being reported upon, the margin of error in calculating how much of the float is left is large. There are weeks when Extravaganza loses zero reported top prizes. Finally, InterProvincial games are usually $10 or $20 games and those tickets have the ability to make my knees buckle.

    3. I play only with slight hope of ever winning a grand prize, since the odds for such, on average, are one in a million - i won`t play a game without any grand prizes, but grand prizes are not a big factor in what i choose to play - to me, it's a "needle in the haystack" that's not worth actively seeking - it's a nice dream to win, but i`m a realist who values ALL prizes that any ticket offers - i look for the best odds in 9 different categories and summarize that in my rating of games to decides what's best from my perspective - Double Cash For Life has a great grand prize, but the game offers pathetic 2nd worst odds of 1 in 1,200 to win 4x+ on your $ - the 4th worst game at 4x+ is Cashingo at 1 in 79 - that's quite a difference! - to me, a greater percentage of interprovincial tickets are in Ontario than the other provinces, so there`s a greater chance prizes will be won here - but, with near 11,000 ticket agents in Ontario, that's still quite the odds against ever scoring a grand prize off even just an Ontario only ticket - a bias against interprovincial tickets i think denies you some entertaining games with worthy prizes - the utter randomness of prizes provide no basis for trying to pin prizes to a location in my opinion - i also see no benefit to any lottery if there was such a thing as targeted locations for prizes - if a store near me sold a big prize, i would probaly stop buying that ticket from there! - the OLG lives off of daily sales and grand prizes are a distant 2nd issue in just a cost of doing business.

So I bought another n kept my $40. I won $10 so I'll buy another today. I just wanted to point out that was my 2nd $50 win with cadillac ( I won a month ago I didn't take any pics of it tho). When I put in the Internet codes I seen iv entered 6 so I won 3/6 since last summer for a total of $110 not bad!

Also I don't know if you heard but 2 people from my city won from the same 711 on the same night ( jan.31st)on 2 separate draws the guy won the guaranteed million n the girl won $100,000 on encore. Also maybe 4 yrs ago my friend won $100,000 on money multiplier(she bought the ticket st.cath) she was from Wellend n this other guy also bought a ticket in St. Cath (he is also from Wellend). They won days apart. Just thought I'd mention that because those are 2 crazy senarios that seem like billion to one odds..

I have a theory that there are ALWAYS bigger prizes claimed at the beginning of a newly released game.

    3. @Anon: Like Doug, my initial interest wasn't Instant Games, it was actually slots. And like many gaming arenas, many theories and speculations to improve one's odds. There were speculations that when a new slot game was introduced the odds of winning were greater in order to stimulate interest. Of course, this was impossible to prove.

Is your theory true? It's possible. But giving up bigger prizes at the beginning would probably only hurt sales and interest later on (middle, end). There's really no reason to do this as the minimum 30% hold already favors the OLG and confidence in the game is paramount to getting players to continue playing.

    4. Nice wins, Farmer Stu.

Obviously people do get lucky and manage to win mid-tier prizes (which for arguments sakes I'll define as odds between 1-in-100 and 1-in-3000). Sadly, given my luck and limited budget, I haven't had the frequent pleasure.

Still, I've chosen to focus on small prize payouts mainly because there were questions about players not experiencing the prize payout percentage in the OLG info sheets. Obviously, these percentages were being skewed by the top prizes. The small prize payout numbers I calculate were only trying to capture what someone with limited budget and play was most likely to experience. I had #1798 WWF with a hit rate of 30.1% and a payback of 56.071% so not too far off from your 53% but definitely not near the 64.93% published.

As always, SPPB is just one tool. Doug's list incorporating remaining cash and float ratios and CL66's list of hard odds are also invaluable tools to consider.

  14. just won $16 on the wheel of fortune scratch ticket. Won $10 on the bonus section. Saw that it was close to 1500-1. Crazy! Too bad it wasn't more
