Holiday Spectacular #1816 Gets Its Day In The Sun

Even though Holiday Spectacular is down to one Grand Prize from its original three, it takes over top spot given that only 14% (+/- 2%) of its float remains to be sold. You presently have one chance in 120,000 to get the last prize. The game has also reached its deactivation date meaning that retailers can no longer activate new packages for sale. Will a player manage to snag the last prize somewhere or will the OLG claim it indirectly? Time will tell. At present, $.21 of every dollar spent on the game will go to that Grand Prize winner.

Top Rated Games

  1. $10 Holiday Spectacular #1816 - One Grand Prize left and the clock is ticking.
  2. $4 Bonus Cash For Life #1168 - Two Grand Prizes left, 2 million tickets left to sell.
  3. $4 Double Cash For Life #1170 - $1,350,000 prize for a $4 play.

Games to Avoid

  2. $3 Crossword #3206 - Three $10,000 prizes left and 1.4 million tickets.
  3. $3 More Lucky Lines #1794 - I'm tired of beating this drum. Turns out the OLG can peddle these losers.
  4. $1 Lucky Lines #1770 - De-Activate these dogs, please!
  5. $3 Crossword #3207 - 1 chance in 2.7 million to win $50,000? No thanks.

$1 - $2 Game Update

Holiday Cashout is a remarkably good game for $2.

$3 Game Update

Cashingo #1820 is new and is the best rated of the $3 games.

$4 - $5 Game Update

Bonus Cash For Life #1168 still tops the list but I'm tired of losing with it.

$10 - $20 Game Update

Instant Gift Pack has become a poor choice. Avoid.

Comings and Goings

Four new games have come on line to start 2015. Check out CL66's reviews on the games in the comments to last week's update.

Double Cash For Life offers a lump sum payment of $1,350,000 which is attractive for  $4 investment but the 40.4% return to winners of more than $4 and up to $100 is the lowest of any game for sale. The cash rate of 1 in every 5.83 tickets for more than the cost of the ticket is also good. How can both things be true? The answer is that there are many small prize winners and not much else other than the Grand Prizes.

The new Cross Word Tripler #1810 has potential but the older version (#1791) is a better choice at the moment.

Cashingo #1820 is an odd game in that there are no prizes offered between $500 and $75. The prize structure at the top end is good for a $3 game. I did not get a chance to play the older version of the game as its ticket became scarce when it became a recommended game. I may try some of this version early on.

Diamond 7s #1822 is hot off the press. Not crazy about the low Grand Prize of $77, 777 but the game does return 51% of its total revenue to winners of more than $5 and less than or equal to $100. That's a big plus.

Personal Play

Started the year out with two Crossword Triplers and two 20X Lucky tickets. Also threw in a Lotto Max just for fun. I struck out on the 20 X Lucky Tickets but both Triplers were winners returning $15. Lotto Max won a free ticket. I must confess that the ticket that won $10 was one that I thought was a loser until I checked it at the store. Based on blog commentators, I'm not the only one to whom this happens. Always always always check your losing tickets with a scanner in the store.

In Conclusion

There have been several media stories lately of mistake tickets showing up. Check the comments to last weeks posting for more. Here's one:

http://news.yahoo.com/not-fast-mexico-says-lottery-winner-213732609.html?soc_src=copy

I love these stories as they remind us that these games are not foolproof and forums like this one can serve to keep interested folks updated on glitches as they occur.

I had occasion to call the OLG yesterday concerning the new Double Cash For Life game. The game sheet indicates that 69.63% of total revenue is returned to players. As part of my analysis of new games I always multiply out the prize structure for my purposes. According to my calculations, the return rate for the game is 64.6%. This is more in keeping with games that cost $4 or $5. I spoke to a very helpful young woman at the OLG. She indicated that someone would call me back within 48 hours. I think that there is a typographical error on the game sheet. I'll let you know the outcome next week.

I hate delving into the political arena but I would recommend that more businesses and government departments set up their call centres in communities outside of major metropolitan areas. The OLG Centre is in Sault Ste Marie and I have never failed to have a positive experience when I call them. It makes sense to me that there are young people living in such communities who would choose to stay there instead of moving to the city if they could obtain employment. I imagine that the OLG jobs are good jobs and that the people who hold them, appreciate them. I also suspect that they stay with their employer for longer periods of time thereby becoming better assets to the employer. Frankly, I don't see a downside.

Best to all.

Doug

  1. Bought 3 Cadillac's and 2 Extraordinaire's today. 4 of the 5 were winners. You would think I made a profit....Nope! All 4 were prizes that were the same as the ticket cost. Oh well, this is better than I usually do......

    1. I don't consider winning your money back a "winner". It is olg's way of printing free ticket like they do in the states

    2. I'm with you on that score. I'd like to see the OLG introduce a game where every winning ticket was worth more than the cost of the ticket. Yes, there would be fewer winning tickets but I'd buy them (maybe).

    3. I agree- just didn't know what to call them. I suppose I could say 4 of 5 were free tickets.

    4. It may not be "winning the lottery", but more like "winning opportunities to win the lottery". If I have a budget of $30 for the week (like I did yesterday) and I "win back" $40, and I choose to roll it all back in, I've more than doubled my chances at a winning prize, and that suits me just fine!

  2. Hi Doug,

With deactivation of games, it's something i never seem to be able to predict beforehand. I don't get why the majority of the time it's done without a clear-cut reason. This bothered me much before, but now i know it's futile to comprehend the apparent lack of logic they seem to operate by at times. I think you, and a few other regulars to your blog, could do better to ensure fairness and transparency are up front to make scratch tickets better for buyers and sellers.
If say a movie put's an actor at the top of the credits, i expect to see them for more than just a few minutes on screen. So it's crazy at times the way the OLG can push grand prizes, yet we can be left clueless as to whether we will have a chance at them or how long a timeframe for such. For those of us in the know, it can seem like a kick in the nuts, when we have been buying tickets towards a certain prize to only find out later the rug has been pulled out from underneath us. As well, i feel for the poor sod who's out there buying, say, More Lucky Lines, when it has no grand prizes and the seller who knows that, doesnt bother to tell them.
With printing and distribution, i don't think it's planned in a manner to target certain prizes to specific regions. I beleive the majority of people who buy any kind of lottos would not be influenced by a substantial win in an area they dwell. A corner store near me sold a grand prize for a $5 game last september, because of that, i hardly ever buy $5 tickets from them. So, an opposite effect in my case. It would take you a LOT of time and effort, to track wins and locations to try and come up with statiscal evidence of your perception. I beleive you are correct tho, that considerable wins have occured more often than they statisticly should in unlikley places.
Your theory on prize targeted markets is plausible, but i don't see a worthy benefit to the OLG to indulge in such. I beleive they orientate their marketing almost solely based on their tracking of past sales of a region or a location, to determine what kinds of current and new tickets will go where they beleive will sell the best. I beleive daily sales are their prime motivation, and that little else could be done, such as prize targeted markets, to try and have an influence upon that. I feel that RNG'S apply chaos theory to lotto's, so i find it futile to look for reasoning to attempt to explain some going on's, like that Lucky Lines fiasco. Sometimes in life, there are no answer, s**t just happns - lol.

    1. CL66,

I am aware that I can be negatively influenced by seeing the number of Grand Prizes that are won in smaller communities. I have to remember that there are a great number of those communities in existence. I collected the location of all winners of $10,000 over a period of six months. I also know that the OLG reports on sales by zone. The break the province down into a dozen or so zones. If I was to obtain the report of Instant Game sales, by zone, I could determine what the likelihood is of each zone getting a winning ticket. On the other hand, prizes for Lottomax and 649 should be closely aligned with ticket sales given the obvious randomness of the games.

The problem is twofold: I need sample size large enough to draw conclusions from and I'm not certain what that is. Secondly, I would have to determine he zone in which each prize was won. It can all be done but I have not had the impetus to undertake the amount of work that would be necessary.

Why am I suspicious? It strikes me that small communities are unlikely to have many big lotto wins due to the numbers involved. There are simply not enough tickets purchased in comparison to Toronto for this to take place. What the OLG could do is ensure that more Grand Prize winning tickets are won in these areas in order to promote sales. If your local store never sold a winning ticket you might develop a negative attitude towards the games. This could happen on a random basis if the printer were to produce a winner in the batch of tickets that were being sent to Zone X. That zone would cover a wide area but someone in a smaller town somewhere is going to win.

If I had to bet on my theory, I'd say that it is not the case but I may just run an experiment to see what happens.

  3. $5 Diamond 7s - Review

    Grand prize: 7 x $77,777
    Next top prize: 2 x $27,777
    Number of tickets: 3,059,000

All available prizes and odds to win:
    $5 or more (any prize) - 1 in 3.86
    $7 or more - 1 in 6.13
    $10 or more - 1 in 7.44
    $11 or more - 1 in 7.89
    $14 or more - 1 in 10.04
    $15 or more - 1 in 13.87
    $17 or more - 1 in 19.19
    $19 or more - 1 in 20.60
    $20 or more - 1 in 23.75
    $22 or more - 1 in 32.41
    $27 or more - 1 in 38.67
    $31 or more - 1 in 98.62
    $34 or more - 1 in 203
    $37 or more - 1 in 287
    $44 or more - 1 in 379
    $54 or more - 1 in 561
    $77 or more - 1 in 780
    $80 or more - 1 in 1,082
    $107 or more - 1 in 1,279
    $154 or more - 1 in 4,757
    $220 or more - 1 in 14,850
    $700 or more - 1 in 18,883
    $900 or more - 1 in 25,924
    $27,777 or more - 1 in 339,889
    $77,777 - 1 in 437,000

    Out of all 31 games:
    Ranks 7th on winning $50,000+
    Ranks 10th on winning $5,000+
    Ranks 24th on winning $1,000+
    Ranks 13th on winning $250+
    Ranks 14th on winning $50+
Ranks 13th on winning 2x-5x your $ or better
Ranks 26th on winning a ticket price back
Ranks 24th on winning any prize

The good news: 25 different prizes, 2nd most of all tickets. The bad news: only 9 prizes over $900 within 3.06 million tickets. $5 tickets are often bad for odds to win any prize at, this one is no different, at odds of 1 in 3.86. Unfortunately, this one is different, in that it's the worst $5 ticket on rating to win 2x-5x your $ or better on. While you can win up to 7 times on this ticket, keep in mind this ticket has those bogus $2 + $3 prizes. The odds of getting a doubled win by revealing a "horseshoe" symbol are 1 in 10.47. You can possibly get as many as 3 doubled wns on a ticket. 75% of doubled wins are $10-$20, 24% are $22-$54 and 1% are $80-$900. I rate this ticket as 47/100 making it 16th out of 31 games and 6th out of the 7 $5 tickets. I will play this ticket, but it won`t be often or many, as all the other $5 tickets rate better, even with lesser grand prizes.

  4. Having a horrible run lately with Cadillac, fortune and bcfl. I might need to switch to some different games for a while. Anyhow I Just found some old money multiplier(#1769, red and black one) was contemplating getting it but don't recall if the grand prize was still available. If anyone has the stats that would be great. Tried looking at old winners but I can only see from Dec.

  5. Wow! That game has been deleted from the Outstanding Prize list since early September. The last information I have on the game indicated that two Grand Prizes of $100,000 were left to be claimed and only 10% of the float was left. Your chances to win a Grand Prize were 122,000:1. I would definitely give it a try. You could confirm the outstanding prizes by calling the OLG. Even if one of the prizes was claimed post removal from the list it would still be worth a shot. I would also check to be sure that the game has not reached its expiration date. That date is listed on the back of the ticket.

    1. Thanks Doug. I ended up buying the tickets, since the expiry to claim is Aug 2016. However didn't get so lucky with it. 4 tickets and only 2 winners of $5 each. Those wins are actually some of my better hits the past month. I have been getting many duds with the $10 tickets so it's better than nothing.

  6. Just found a bunch of gift packs at a shop near me, but not a regular place that I buy from. Anyhoo, I just made $60 knitting a scarf for a friend's mother, (so basically I was paid to enjoy myself while watching Cosmos and drinking tea;) and I allowed myself to spend half on lottery tickets. I bought 3 packs and won on all three! Not a lot, but enough to feel "uplifted"...2 $10 lucky lines, and $20 on the Jingle Bell Jackpot. I spent $40, won back $40. Awesome. The bonus part is, I now have 3 Cfl's to cash in and hopefully win another $50...or more!

  7. I just wanted to thank Doug, CL, darth and everyone else who contributes to this page. I found this page about a year ago but sadly I wasn't old enough to buy tickets then. But this past summer when I became 18 I went back on this page and took the advice that Doug and all of you give and it has made me more aware of the tickets i'm buying and I have had higher returns then I probably would have if I didn't read this blog. And on that note I bought 3 tickets today. 2 classic rubys, which gave me 1 winner of $50 and 1 cadillac which I won 75 on. So it was a good day to say the least. Keep up the good work guys!

  9. After terrible results in the Fall, I stopped with scratch tickets. However, during the holidays I found myself buying 2 Hit the Jackpot and both won $25. A few days later I bought 2 Bejeweled and both won $15. Well, ok then I forgive you OLG. Although Hit the Jackpot looks like a bad game, I've been very lucky with them. And Bejeweled is my new fav with the small float and 8,000+ $100 prizes.

    My results for Jan are
    Hit The Jackpot: $25, $25, $0, $5, 0, $5, $20.
    Bejeweled : $15, $15, 0, $100, 0 $100

Yes, I've won $100 twice (2 different stores close to home). That pretty much erases my losses for last 4-5 months.

  10. Nice job jay..did you play the ticket or just scratch the code and use the checker. .lol..it appears to be unscratched except for the bottom bonus section..I bought my wife a bejewelled which was a dud..but I couldn't play that game I believe I may have A.D.H.D...I don't blame you if you just scan them and move on. .I need a nap now just thinking about those time consuming tickets. .GL

  11. I always scratch from easiest to hardest. If that is a win I stop unless the game offers multiple wins that include that prize. The $25 Hit the Jackpot were the same bonus type area.

  12. I am weary of purchasing spectacular tickets..$10 a pop, I know of a few stores that have them, but are the odds for prizes other than the grand prize that good?

I bought 2 of them yesterday, both were duds.

As for hit the jackpot, I have won $20 on those cards, multiple times

    $10 or more (any prize) - 1 in 3.30
    $15 or more - 1 in 6.28
    $20 or more - 1 in 9.15

    $10,000 or more - 1 in 428,500
    $50,000 or more - 1 in 571,333
    $100,000 or more - 1 in 979,429
    $500,000 - 1 in 1,142,667

    Out of all 32 games:
    Ranks 10h on winning $50,000+
    Ranks 15th on winning $5,000+
    Ranks 3rd on winning $1,000+
    Ranks 12th on winning $250+
    Ranks 6th on winning $50+
Ranks 12th on winning 2x-5x your $ or better
Ranks 2nd on winning a ticket price back
Ranks 8th on winning any prize

The good news: it's the best $10 ticket for rating to win 2x-5x+ on your $, with lot's of $40 prizes that make this ticket #2 out of all 32 games on odds to win 4x or more on your $. This ticket has the highest prize payout % of all games at 69.90. That is essentially the % of sales awarded as prizes. The bad news: with few mid level prizes, it means odds of 1 in 10,646 to win more than $100. 98% of all prizes are $10-$50: $10/$15 64%, $20/$25 11%, $40/50 23%. The gameplay setup on this ticket is getting all too familiar. $10 Ruby, Cadillac, Fortune and Spectacular, all play out in the same manner. The $10 tickets need some new variety to further interest. Current formats such as Crossword, Bingo, or even Lucky Lines, could help. $10 games are also standard to have 15 different prizes. The "pie" could be sliced up more too add appeal, such as Holly Jolly Tripler, which had 27 different prizes. I rate this ticket as 73/100, making it #4 out of all 32 games and 4th out of the 6 $10 games.

  22. Why is ketchup important?

Because it sounds like "catch up"!

CL66, is it possible to create a 4x-5x category in your listing? Why? Because most games have odds of around 1-in-4. If I expect to win 1-in-4 games, it would be nice to "catch up" with a 4x (or 5x) prize, ie., 4x-5x.

As a matter of fact, I have done this quite often hitting $20 on the older CFL4 game as well as with 20X Lucky. This new category would allow me to quickly gauge which games better give me this opportunity.

    Thanks in advance, TmF.

    1. My 2x-5x+ category is made by combining actual 2x,3x,4x+5x stats WITH prizes over those . Do you want the stats to be ONLY 4x+5x with no prizes above that or? Results can be skewered for instance, such as as $5 20X Lucky, which at 4x+, odds come in 1st place at 11:54:1 while it's 5x+ odds come in 30th at 543:1. This is due to the fact there are almost 250,000 prizes of $20 in this game while the next highest prizes is $50 of which there are only 4,200.

    2. I am interested in a "ONLY 4x+5x" category, if possible. So, nothing below 4x or above 5x. I know it's a narrow band but I've always wondered if this band of prizes, which is roughly Cost-of-ticket x Odds-of-winning-a-prize, has an effect on short term play time.

    4. CL66,

Your posting of information is of interest. It does a couple of things that I think that you should take a look at. Each category includes an "and up" qualifier. We know that the more expensive the game, the better the overall return. Further, when talking about outright prize value, the higher priced games will dominate.

That why I like your multiple factor. It gives smaller games a chance to compete on more level footing with the expensive games. If I win $10 on a $3 game, that is actually better than winning $30 on a $10 game. Plus, if a game has an unusual number of $500 prizes, those prizes will be double and triple counted in your method of obtaining the overall rating.

Seeing as TMF asked for a stat a-la-carte from you, I have a request. I'd like to see a chart of only 2x - 5x the price of the ticket chart. Eliminate the prizes where you get your money back and anything over 5 times. This measure should give me an insight into which games have the highest quantity of lower prizes.

I am looking at a new evaluation method and that sort of chart would form half of the new method.

      Best.

      DOug

    5. Hi Doug,

Here's a list (i can't really do a chart) of all prizes that are 2x - 5x. This is by ticket, as i don't have the time now to organize it by odds per multiplier. I hope this will suffice in giving you the insight you seek.

  24. Played playolg last night, blackjack and European roulette. Broke even on the Blackjack but won $100 on the roulette. These games pay out more than scratch tickets do. I think roulette pays out 97%. I may take my scratching money and use it on playolg.

  25. Just wondering if someone could please extrapolate and tell me the approximate number of the old crossword tripler (#1791) tickets are left to be sold...........it started out with 8,244, 600.

    Thank you in advance.

    1. A quick calculation using the $150 prize category: 225 out of 1472 = 15.29%. Applying that to the original 8,244,600 float gives 1,260,599 tickets remaining.

Keep in mind this is a rough estimate.
